The Good, the Bad & all THAT WHITE: Oscars 2015

The Good, the Bad & all THAT WHITE: Oscars 2015

Noticeably there was a slight revolution going on during the 87th academy Awards held yesterday. The feministic speech of winner Patricia Arquette (appropriately held in a no-nonsense black & white number) and the refusal of Reese Witherspoon to only talk fashion on the carpet (note: she also wore black & white) set the tone for a new modesty, whispering understatement is the new statement.

Exploded voluminous fireworks of fabric gave room to “the new demure”: a humble figure flattering smaller silhouette away from bombastic drama and dresses screaming “I am Cinderella” (Except J-Lo of course but she’s from the block so that’s an excuse). Luckily the multitude of fishtail dresses have had their days in the spotlight too (Rita Ora, you totally spoiled that moment in your Marchesa gown).

Clearly the other trend of the night was taking the white choice of nominated movies quite literally to the red carpet: white was EVERYWHERE. It always makes me nervous just looking at it because in my mind I already spilt some red wine on it and see some food tumbling -in slow motion- out of my mouth and onto the dress.

Saint Laurent (Dakota Johnson, Margot Robbie) was the new darling designer of the night, battling hard with Armani and Calvin Klein for most worn. And although I hated Marion Cotillard's (again white) gown, nobody purrs “Dior” into a microphone better than her.

Also the new pure transformed into hair and make up, I swear everybody will rock sleek do’s this summer, get your irons and gel ready. And statement necklaces (Cate Blanchet, Scarlett Johansson) will be back from never have been away.

To come back to Rees's movement #askhermore: I totally agree girl! No one on the red carpet during all fashion talk was aked what shoes they're wearing. Which was (together with the pouring rain) the catastrophe of the night.

Golden Globes Baby!

The Golden Globes 2015 held yesterday gave Hollywoods' A-listers (or as Tina Fey puts it: “a bunch of despicable, spoiled minimally talented brats”) their first opportunity to dazzle and shine the highly anticipated first red carpet of the year. And like every year, everybody is talking about dresses, accessories and killer bodies, neglecting the fact that the most important tool to walk down the carpet is of course the perfect pair of heels.

E! ‘s attempt to embarrass their guests with the stiletto-cam rather than the manicure-cam didn’t quite cover it, loads of hassle to lift all the layers of fabric to hit that damn little thingie on the floor. But then again, most of Hollywoods' royalty channeled “Old Hollywood Glamour” (read: fashion-retro instead of fashion-forward) which is all about long, floor- and heel covering evening gowns.

The shoe trend of the evening was a classic black pump followed by the nude sandal (soooo 1950-2014) so it's Lena Dunham who wins my favorite shoe moment by kick-ass carpet in a red pointy number.

In other fashion news: Amal Clooney's gloves probably have their own twitter account by now, Jared Letho’s messy braid will put hair stylists out of work (DIY!!!) and Conchita Wurst snatched up the 'most glamorous and best dressed' title of the night, thanks to a green velvet dress which looked very “Out of the Woods” and something Snow White would craft from the drapes straight of the dwarf’s mansion.

But why not: it’s all a fairytale after all. Happy Golden Globes shoe-moments!

New Year, New Heels!

New Year, New Heels!

With the New Year's resolutions designers will also be flooding us with new ideas to decorate our bodies (NYResol. No1: TONE IT), delight our minds (NYResol. No2: PIMP IT), and get us ready for the hottest dates ever (NYResol. No3: JUST BRING IT ON...). Certainly it’s not only the outfit which will us guide through a spectacular 2014, but the SHOES which will carry us in every situation, flawless no doubt.

The shoe fairs from Düsseldorf to Mailand played it rather safe this year though (hmmm, recession, or just the new modesty?), so expect a lot of flats, boy brogues, mid-hight heels with the lady-like pointy toe as we know it by now. Gladiator sandals will be back (if you didn’t dare last season: prepare to look like Cleopetra now), as will the flat form (aka still not flattering, sorry Marni). Spikes are replaced with shiny rhinestones which you will find even on sneakers and something that looks like a pimped Birkenstock sandal (Prada, hello?).

New maybe is the elaborated “Peep Heel”, a cut-out in the back, exposing your heel: so I suppose we should be investing in callus removers rather than Chanel lipstick now for utter “Samt Füssli”. And if you're a bitch on a budget: you can’t go wrong investing in something shiny and metallic: this season silver, gold and bronze are almost everywhere (no, Croqs do NOT count!).

Having said so: Happy High Heeling 2014, and remember: Diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but shoes are her lover.

January Obsessions

Spending most of the month indoors definitely has its advantages. Loads of time to daydream about new heels, and not going outside ruining them due to the never-ending soaking (or sucking, you choose) weather conditions. Perfect also for tucking into uplifting literature (my cousin gave me the most amazing book which will help moi emerge from hibernation as sleek and lean beauty goddess). Not that I haven't done any exercise yet, but hello: spiritual preparation will do half of the trick and otherwise: statement jewellery (see above) always distracts and keeps eyes away from anything wobbly beneath your neck.

Have also been very busy preparing for the Oscars (if you haven't already, please go see "Amour" and "Beasts of the Southern Wild", both utterly touching), and ditched champagne for once, replacing it with tea (am obsessed now, carrying little Pickwick bags in my pocket everywhere, call me tea-oholic).

And since the weather is nothing but grey it seemed quite logical to develope an utter crush on the black and white Spring/Summer trend (my favorites: stripes and graphic patterns). The latter might also totally help (conceal, conceal, conceal!) if I stay the lazy bum I have been and don't loose that stone I actually intended to. Ah, who cares: as long as my shoe size doesn't increase as well and I can still fit into those beautiful Jil Sander boots, I will be a happy gal. Cheerio!

On our way home from the cinema yesterday (Dear Emma Stone: loved your black overknees! Dear Emma Stone: teamed up with cognac-colored boots, not so much...), we strolled past all the beautifully lighted shopping windows: Whoopsie!
Autumn (heel) collections everywhere! And Mrs. Stone wasn’t so wrong in her bootie (color) choice after all: loads of dark green, brown, black, cognac colored beauties everywhere, just waiting to be worn. Now I know myself and a new heel season always means a stretch on bank account too...*sigh*

End up at the Daniele Dentici shop window, as glued to the window as Spiderman was to Emma just a couple of hours ago. Beautiful, inspiring stuff: soft leathers neatly arranged one after the other. I almost wished it was autumn and cold already so I’d have an excuse to buy them all.

(Spiderman’s ability to break glass would be very much appreciated too...)
Oh wait! It’s raining and cold outside today... the perfect excuse to hide somewhere dark green (Chesterfield couch), armed with intellectual literature, brown cookies and the odd (black) coffee, tucked snugly under a blanket.

And whoopsie!... how did those cuties land on my feet?
Obviously nothing wrong with adding a bit of “cognac” to the color pallet on a lazy sunday afternoon...

To hell with the bank account.

It’s my last day of hunting the streets for this year’s spring trends (shoe wise, my dear ladies, and all for you) and I find myself a little exhausted. Having run crisscross through town this week (in- and for affordable heels), today’s theme is as daunting to me as its origin.

Jazz freaks me out. And rather makes me want to run away (quickly, so it would have to be in flats). But I suppose if today’s brief would be renamed “Roaring 20’s” or “Art Deco” or…. let’s just say “Gucci”: I am all in.

Keen on finding some fringe, sequins and glamour, I enter (carefully looking left and right: I may be on a bitch-on-a-budget-mission, but I still have a reputation to lose…) a Moroccan store in my own hood (next to Bakery “Hicrit 1” and Döner “Masoma”). The “SALE” signs and cheap boot shelves on the street make me shudder every day when I pass by while doing grocery shopping, but having learned from my past week I thought I would give it a shot.

Turns out the shop is VERY Jazz. Worse than I thought (best intentions) and while I try to get through the pain and just find my way out: One chord, one right tune, ONE RIGHT SHOE. Something I can work with. Something that (with a little work) will do. Isn’t that very Jazz? Interpreting? Give me some sequins, I will stitch them onto this find myself! And then marry the night… It is Friday after all.

Trend fever: Flowers

There are a couple of themes in fashion which come back every year.
For winter that would be the continuous reinterpretation of black, grey and off white,
and for summer something that, unsurprisingly, makes us ladies cheerful (especially when it comes from Fleurop and carries a card): flowers.

Since the runway is going crazy with floral elements (I reckon the designers either spent a night locked in at a botanic garden or got high on some “floral ingredients” themselves), my inspiration for today will be the absolutely stunning Blumarine Flower on Spandex Sandal.
As I can only afford a 50 EUR dent in my Louis Vuitton Limited Edition Cherry Blossom Wallet, I head to another bitches-on-a-budget-paradise: the Jan Evertsenstraat (my favorite when it comes to redeeming lottery wins for plants anyway ;-).
And yeah: apparently this is not only the place to stock up for your balcony, but your shoe closet as well. I find a great pair which satisfies my floral hunger, and the best thing: I won’t have to cut them, water them or see them withered after a couple of days.

So guys, listen up: next time you think about pleasing your lady with a huge bouquet (isn’t it about time???), consider the options, and head to a shoe dealer instead: we also love our gifts in a box instead of cellophane.
Regardless of season.
Just saying.
