The Great Wedding

The Great Wedding

So far it’s been a year full of love, and wedding announcements (and the follow up parties) have popped up like mushrooms on acid throughout the past 365 days. This fourth one was extra special to me though, not only because I’ve been planning and designing the event for month, but it was also the big day for my sweet baby sister, my best friend and high heel soul mate.

Hours and hours we spent on picking the theme (Great Gatsby), marveling dresses and shoes, picturing the event in it’s brightest (champagne) colors. Feather stolas were casted, bridesmaids gowns selected, pearl necklaces (ultra long) ordered. Everyone came in their finest costumes, their best heels, throwing in their every two cents worth to honour bride & groom.

And after all the long hours planning and spending so much time & effort in lovely but pricey details, I realised that the biggest and most precious good achieved was actually the brides smile at the event itself and the guests all laughing and dancing until the early morning hours, not wanting to leave the lovely castle in Austria where the event took place.

Priceless love, fantastic memories, a pair of COMPLETELY ruined shoes, one pearl necklace shredded, a hangover as large as the party itself: Mr. Gatsby would have been so jealous.

Today’s heels are a bargain steel (pimped with a little tulle) from a market in Spain. I never had more fun dancing.

The most crazy day in Holland is just around the corner and every year around this time the same inevitably questions arise. Where to celebrate? (Boat madness? Street madness? Private madness?) How to pull a decent Lindsay Lohan (aka party to the max) without checking into rehab afterwards? And how to sport the must-wear color of the day (orange) without looking like an escaped tropic bird on acid?

Kingsday may be the most frolicsome national event of the year, fashion wise it is a disaster. There is a reason why fashion designers never choose full orange-outfits on any runway EVER. The same goes for footwear, unless you are a sneaker or Crocs person. Dancing, cheering, running around with 800.000 party companions soaking in all the madness will have it’s toll on your outfit (beer showers, canal water, probably rain this year) and your feet (toes stepped on, blisters, scattered glass) so you better be prepared.

I always opt for some cheerful comfy layers and some heels I won’t regret ruining (although NO heel deserves such a cruel fate), wearing a smile on top of everything and making sure my glass (=most important accessoire) is never empty. Then just go with the flow and enjoy to the max. No one ever will be excused wearing bright orange trousers with a tiger print in public on any other day. Be that tropic bird for once and HAVE FUN!!!

Pucker up, ladies. Smooches abound every spring, making their mark everywhere from shoes (Charlotte Olympia) to sunglasses (Jean-Charles de Castelbajac). Saint Laurent‘s Hedi Slimane doused an 80s-tinged ruffle top and short black wrap dress with an allover rouge lip print. Inspired by Yves Saint Laurent’s 1971 Vichy Chic collection, the smackers were a somewhat surprising embrace of the house’s history, and the high street (H&M: Sweaters! Zara: Scarfs!) just couldn’t wait to follow.

If mouthy accessories (anyone in risking a big lip?) are more your taste, look no further than my all time classic: a Lulu Guiness bag. Ah! I could have one in a different shade for every day. Or maybe that Diane von Fürstenberg I-phone cover? Or maybe that classic Chanel lipstick? Bright kisses (printed all over the object of your desire yourself) never run out of style. As does my shoe favorite of this month: Sule Orhan’s “Easy rider”.

Only one day left in good old 2014 and I find myself at the most gorgeous, yet coldest location ever. While jumping up and down in the park of Klessheim, Austria, I can’t help the thought that this very moment pretty much resembles the extremes of this year.

I’m not a big fan of quotes (unless they contain the words “high heels” or make me giggle (like “DON’T READ THE NEXT WORDS...... “oh - you little rebel I like you”.....), but if there’s something that I learned to be true, it’s that it’s worth to fight for your beliefs: no matter what. There will always be doubters, haters and non-believers but there will also always be YOU to prove them wrong. And YES, you can do it (even when you are freezing your toes off). And YES, keep your dreams as high as the heels that you are wearing.
What 2015 will bring? I have no idea, but I am excited to share it with you. Thank you for being part of all sore feet, blisters, highs- and lows measured in heels 2014.

Happy Holidays my dear shoelovers, I hope we will meet again in 2015!

Yes, I saw it coming. I was warned (fashion signs!), I was alarmed, I was prepared. Or actually, I was so not prepared to be tip-toeing (still in heels) around this summer's hottest trend, the *deep sigh*: advanced flat (aka grown up and pimped orthopaedic shoe).

When Heidi Klum came up with her first edition of crystallized Birkenstocks back in the 90s I could still turn a blind eye hoping that the lapse of taste would be temporary. And certainly I tried not to be blinded (aka totally eye and heel insulted) when I spotted certain creatures sporting the persistent “Adilette”, which already found its way into fashion magazines last season.
Brrrrrrrrrr!

But what to do when flatforms are praised from Elle to Vogue as the new cool and promoted so fashionably? *Deep sigh again*: you try of course, even though for a heelalista this means lowering standards quite literally. Tricked everybody though because far away from home (nobody knows me) and on a boat (no heels allowed) everybody just thought I was so “laid back”. Now you delete that picture of me in flats from your long-term memory forever. This never happened and will just stay between you and me, OK?

Amsterdam Dance Event was in full swing last weekend, and invite after invite poured in to dance across the city. I had decided to take a detour to mayhem though and rocked my babies at an entirely different event: the parquet flooring of an exclusive charity dinner.

The decision was probably a little bit selfish as my new favourite heels definitely deserve to be danced to the tunes of some fancy DJ: they walk and dance like a dream! But couldn’t help think that I'd have more opportunities to marvel at the beauties (below the desk) while picking mushrooms from china, rather than causing myself a hernia trying to move vividly to techno and glance down at the same time.

Chose the James Bond setting and cocktails, but - excuse me - of course I danced too. You don't refuse when 007 (aka fundraising CEO, aka Schöner Mann) asks for a waltz.

Just give a girl the right shoes, and she can dance the world, whatever the occasion.
