The Good, the Bad & all THAT WHITE: Oscars 2015

The Good, the Bad & all THAT WHITE: Oscars 2015

Noticeably there was a slight revolution going on during the 87th academy Awards held yesterday. The feministic speech of winner Patricia Arquette (appropriately held in a no-nonsense black & white number) and the refusal of Reese Witherspoon to only talk fashion on the carpet (note: she also wore black & white) set the tone for a new modesty, whispering understatement is the new statement.

Exploded voluminous fireworks of fabric gave room to “the new demure”: a humble figure flattering smaller silhouette away from bombastic drama and dresses screaming “I am Cinderella” (Except J-Lo of course but she’s from the block so that’s an excuse). Luckily the multitude of fishtail dresses have had their days in the spotlight too (Rita Ora, you totally spoiled that moment in your Marchesa gown).

Clearly the other trend of the night was taking the white choice of nominated movies quite literally to the red carpet: white was EVERYWHERE. It always makes me nervous just looking at it because in my mind I already spilt some red wine on it and see some food tumbling -in slow motion- out of my mouth and onto the dress.

Saint Laurent (Dakota Johnson, Margot Robbie) was the new darling designer of the night, battling hard with Armani and Calvin Klein for most worn. And although I hated Marion Cotillard's (again white) gown, nobody purrs “Dior” into a microphone better than her.

Also the new pure transformed into hair and make up, I swear everybody will rock sleek do’s this summer, get your irons and gel ready. And statement necklaces (Cate Blanchet, Scarlett Johansson) will be back from never have been away.

To come back to Rees's movement #askhermore: I totally agree girl! No one on the red carpet during all fashion talk was aked what shoes they're wearing. Which was (together with the pouring rain) the catastrophe of the night.

Golden Globes Baby!

The Golden Globes 2015 held yesterday gave Hollywoods' A-listers (or as Tina Fey puts it: “a bunch of despicable, spoiled minimally talented brats”) their first opportunity to dazzle and shine the highly anticipated first red carpet of the year. And like every year, everybody is talking about dresses, accessories and killer bodies, neglecting the fact that the most important tool to walk down the carpet is of course the perfect pair of heels.

E! ‘s attempt to embarrass their guests with the stiletto-cam rather than the manicure-cam didn’t quite cover it, loads of hassle to lift all the layers of fabric to hit that damn little thingie on the floor. But then again, most of Hollywoods' royalty channeled “Old Hollywood Glamour” (read: fashion-retro instead of fashion-forward) which is all about long, floor- and heel covering evening gowns.

The shoe trend of the evening was a classic black pump followed by the nude sandal (soooo 1950-2014) so it's Lena Dunham who wins my favorite shoe moment by kick-ass carpet in a red pointy number.

In other fashion news: Amal Clooney's gloves probably have their own twitter account by now, Jared Letho’s messy braid will put hair stylists out of work (DIY!!!) and Conchita Wurst snatched up the 'most glamorous and best dressed' title of the night, thanks to a green velvet dress which looked very “Out of the Woods” and something Snow White would craft from the drapes straight of the dwarf’s mansion.

But why not: it’s all a fairytale after all. Happy Golden Globes shoe-moments!

It’s no secret that to win over the academy in the annual Oscar procedure you must a) play a part in a war movie (preferably WWII), b) gain or lose at least 15 pounds for the role, or c) bound and stretch for the miserable past (aka historic epic screen plays). Changing gender on screen helps too, and best if your role fits all of the above.

It was a feast this year to watch most of the actors nominated weaving their way drunk or outraged through 180 minutes, suffering the influence of drugs subscripted or just the cruelty of the non subscribed: ancient historic life. Guess Mr. Hanks is biting his fist now, regretting to only almost have drowned in water (SO NOT VODKA!), and Oprah just dialled Weight Watchers and\or her stylist to change her into a woman. Hmmmm...

Revelation of all this: Since Leonardo did not lose or gain weight for his role wallowing in vice (drugs, money, alcohol, sex), he will not get any statue tonight (again). But he couldn’t care less, he is probably having the most fun doing what he does on and off screen anyway: indulging in the company of a supermodel. I bet she wears gorgeous heels.

I love January for two reasons: It’s SALE everywhere and Hollywood’s Award Season officially opens:
the perfect excuse to never leave the house (except to score some cuties on SALE)
and binge your way through all the nominated films.

Spent all night yesterday watching the globes with my buds “ZA” and “NOTTI”,
had way too much popcorn and champagne and (of course) overslept mercilessly this morning,
but YESSS! - it was all worth it. Nothing better than dressing up at home for the occasion, treating yourself with a “glamicure”, having a blast judging Stars and Starlets, red carpet outfits, hair-do’s, and acceptance speeches from afar.

Sleep deprivation? So not Globes at all!

No doubt though that (besides all the gossip: I so do not wanna have what Jacqueline Bisset was having, but definitely the Louboutin’s Emma Thompson dropped at her speech...) the true winners of yesterday night were my fabulous, FABULOUS shoes. *Voice dramatically sobbing*:
“And I wanna thank Paul Warmer for their generosity, Guiseppe for always making my feet look pretty, and my patient boyfriend who snored through the night and couldn’t care less about the glitz and glam of a heelalista’s-world.
L.o.v.e. y.o.u. a.l.l.!!!!!!”

Today’s shoes are Guiseppe Zanotti.

It has been a beautiful, beautiful summer so far with loads of cheerful events and possibilities to drag out the fancy wardrobe, the most glamorous (aka impossible to wear) heels, blowing all remaining budget for facials, hairdressers and spray tans to look fabulous and: celebrating your heart out.

After months of planning and anticipation our mates Kim&Alex finally got hitched: my very first dutch wedding to attend. And what a day it was. Such a magic location, such a wonderful bride and groom (am still in awe about the blue laces all the guys wore: a new trend???), so many lovely people, so much love in the air, and well.... such a heavy bout of rain as well. I guess also the sky had to pay tribute squeezing out that little tear which we all had in our eyes.

After all that heavy partying, dancing, toasting and cheering, you will understand that some rest is needed. With beautiful memories in mind, I am off for a (heel) retreat aka well deserved holiday aka to hell with the inches and HELLO shabby T’s, bikini and Flip Flops.
Toedelidokie!

Shine!

It comes with my profession not only to run in heels (kind of a self-chosen duty), but to run to a lot of events too. Red carpets are my second home and any opportunity to shine at some fancy party my guilty pleasure. I almost always bring my camera, to cover the glitz and glam, imagining I’ll take the perfect picture - only to find that most of the time I don’t feel like it.

Not because of the awkwardness of kneeling on the floor somewhere in an evening gown to fiddle with your self-timer (in front of a full audience.. been there, done that), or asking another guest to take the picture. It's because most of those events don’t feel real. And by real I mean that you feel relaxed, totally yourself - and not only part of the "see and be seen" game, the fake kisses and the superficial conversations. Well, all about shining baby, dig it!

Nothing like the VBAT (biggest design agency in Amsterdam) event I attended recently. No red carpet, nor the über-fancy setting, plus serving (no offence, dear VBAT): warm booze. But the welcome was as warm as the wine, and within no time I found myself not in one, but many inspiring conversations, creative chit chat, and (most importantly) loads of laughter. Needless to say, they had to wipe me out as one of the last guests. And YES! At some point I knelt on the floor AND fumbled with my camera. It just felt real. How nice.

When in Cannes…

Nica Chica (also known from a previous post as “one of my best friends”) sent me an email the other day.

“You won’t believe it” I read, “I’m flying to the Cannes Film Festival, have been invited to the Replay Party. Adrien (Brody), Sean (Penn) and Ewan (McGregor) are coming as well and so are you!”

Wow! That’s definitely an offer I can’t refuse. Have never packed my suitcase so quickly (well, what do you need: a couple of evening gowns, heels and Chopard jewelry…) and a couple of hours later I am where it’s all hot and happening: the Croisette.

Nica Chica is an old routinier when it comes to red carpet events, so in no time we find ourselves in front of a 1.000 Paparazzi lenses and amongst the finest actors in Hollywood. While twisting in front of the cameras I wonder what to say when asked in which movie I am actually playing. Am tempted to lie and say Desperate Housewives, ha! Marion Cotillard passes by, looking hot in Dior (she is so petite, you wouldn’t believe it) and yes: Nica Chica was not lying: almost immediately, I bump into Sean, who can’t stop talking about his fundraiser to benefit the victims of Haiti. He loses interest in me though after finding out that all my money goes straight into my own fund: shoes.

But it’s Ewan who turns out to be my hero of the night. Who would have expected that he is such a fantastic dancer?

We end up doing the Cha-Cha so wildly, that I kick off my heels and dance barefoot the whole night.

“Pssst Darling… Darling” I hear while twirling. Oh it’s boyfriend speaking, what is he doing in Cannes???

“You were moving real weirdly and muttering “Ewan” in your sleep , are you having a nightmare?

Aaaaaaaaaaah, waking up was never as tough as just now.
