A fairytale in eight acts

A Fairytale in Eight Acts

It’s raining cats & dogs in Leiden, one of the oldest dutch cities, outside of Amsterdam. Hardly anybody sets a foot outside and the plushy local theater is deserted. Yet there is vibrant activity in the main hall. Assistants shuffle lights and cables, tons of hair spray dust vaporizes on beautiful models dancing in a iridescent backlight, the swift hand of a make up artist blushing its last stroke on alabaster cheeks.

In the middle of all professional bustle, designer of the hour Esther Dorhout Mees, is focused to the max. Softly she speaks, when the flashlight goes off: “Long fingers, Alice”, “Chin a little bit down”, “Beautiful, hold that”.

We are backstage at “Theatre Decay” the editorial shoot of Esther's latest brilliant work, and I am in Cinderella paradise. Eight gorgeous gowns -a thousand hours of couture work- make there way from dressing room onto the stage, elegantly directed by the designer. There is something very fragile about all this, petit bodies leaning against thick velvet curtains, almost drowning in fluffy polstered chairs. This is were the inspiration for the whole collection has its origin and with today’s work, the journey of an idea will also end.

In an unobserved moment I sneak a pair of heels outside on the theater stairs. After a fairytale photo-shooting like this, it wouldn't surprise me if that prince will stop by, find them (and me) and we can live happily ever after.

Shoots are always something special. The preparation, the possibility of working with talented people (hair, make-up, light, models, stylists, photographers, and, very important: the caterer!), anticipating creating something great and the best picture possible...AH! What a colorful and creative bunch of people, naturally with an attitude: we’re all artists baby, kiss-kiss, bye-bye. Having said so, I always meet the nicest people on sets and am of course very arty myself. Kiss-kiss, love the vibe!

As you are reading this, we have just finished a shoot for Aveda (which my friend Heleen initiated), so today it’s all about the hair. BIG hair. And YOUNG models.
Somewhere in the middle of make-up tubes, mirrors, and professionals stabbing maquillage on perfect skin, styling petit bodies (not an ounce of fat), fumbling with combs and hairspray to fix silky curls, it always seems that all your own flaws become mercilessly apparent. As in m.e.r.c.i.l.e.s.s.l.y.

God, I so need to do my eyebrows, check a new look, get Botox, or best a full body suction/lifting/etc. Or at least stop using that dry shampoo (the only help working late and getting up early), grab a bottle of Aveda and get my hair done properly. I ♥ shoots.... so inspiring!
How did this hairdryer work again?

Am a sucker for inspirational things and have the ability to blend into environments and take on a character I adore. It’s so bad that even when I’m watching a film I totally want to become the heroine (outfit, haircut and personalitiy change included), or aspire to life in another century (princes, dragons and crinolines are welcome).

Madonna was one of my first inspirational instigators: am still suffering under the weight of pearls, black crosses and the perm I wore (almost an intervertebral disc ).
And after meeting Lisbeth Salander from The Girl with the Dragoon Tattoo, I seriously considered a piercing and totally giving up collecting heels and hacking computers instead.

Entering Tim’s studio (photographer-to-be-the-one) today changes everything though. Am totally inspired by the creativity and the flamboyant chaos (aka utter artistic vibe) and am almost hyperventilating between canvases, paint, photographs and cameras (ok, might very well blame Champagne too… :-))
It’s so cool, I immediately want to become a muse: be wild, complex, unpredictable, fragile and complicated at the same time, therefor utterly inspiring and irresistable. Edie Sedgwick (aka Factory girl) will totally do as a role model.

Curious whether I’ll manage to persuade Tim to wear black framed glasses and a wig..
Stay tuned.

There are a lot of really exciting things coming up. Other than business meetings (lately ending, not very fashionably, with fire alarms and me fleeing the scene), I have a shoot coming up (photographer-to-be became photographer-to-be-the-one) and am very excited and curious to see how it goes (not to mention a little nervous). Fashion week is almost here and with the ticket frenzy having begun long ago, the only question that remains (besides getting a ticket at all) is whether I’ll be sitting front row or not.

For both occasions outfits need to be chosen, hairdressers bothered, heels polished and not having signed up for Weight Watchers earlier this year regretted.

And what am I doing the first day in weeks I actually have some spare time? Like… really? Am afraid the fashionable (heel) life starts with being able to at least walk IN to the walk-in closet without being attacked by dust and scattered clothes (that seem to have developed a life of their own).
So a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do……

Wonder if moving wildly to David Bowies “Let’s dance” with a vacuum cleaner could be falsely interpreted.
Pole dancing anyone?
