Happy New Year!

07|01_2016

The long weekend after the New Year was so peaceful and inviting to do nothing that I did exactly that. Polished my heels, ate the rest of my Mom's cookies, slept in, cleaned out the Champagne bottles and before I knew, duty was calling again, and 2016 had officially started.

What a bliss to look back at the old year and give a warm welcome to 356 new days, completely free to be designed in each of your favors.
I hope they will be filled with new ideas, inspiration, laughter, health and happiness - plus the odd new shoe - which will carry you to great new places and adventures.

Have a fabulous start into the new year Shoemonsters!

The Great Wedding

So far it’s been a year full of love, and wedding announcements (and the follow up parties) have popped up like mushrooms on acid throughout the past 365 days. This fourth one was extra special to me though, not only because I’ve been planning and designing the event for month, but it was also the big day for my sweet baby sister, my best friend and high heel soul mate.

Hours and hours we spent on picking the theme (Great Gatsby), marveling dresses and shoes, picturing the event in it’s brightest (champagne) colors. Feather stolas were casted, bridesmaids gowns selected, pearl necklaces (ultra long) ordered. Everyone came in their finest costumes, their best heels, throwing in their every two cents worth to honour bride & groom.

And after all the long hours planning and spending so much time & effort in lovely but pricey details, I realised that the biggest and most precious good achieved was actually the brides smile at the event itself and the guests all laughing and dancing until the early morning hours, not wanting to leave the lovely castle in Austria where the event took place.

Priceless love, fantastic memories, a pair of COMPLETELY ruined shoes, one pearl necklace shredded, a hangover as large as the party itself: Mr. Gatsby would have been so jealous.

Today’s heels are a bargain steel (pimped with a little tulle) from a market in Spain. I never had more fun dancing.

This year seems the official year-of-love with so many weddings, that the fashion-head get’s a little dizzy due to all outfit choices: never prettier than the bride, no white, still festive, you know the rules. Plus, my feet still hurt from the last wedding party, Dr. Scholl to the rescue, please!!!

So when BFF not only called to attend his “I do” in Vienna recently but also to perform with him on stage to surprise the bride, it was clear to opt for a more edgy gown than you would normally expect for a formal, and sometimes “let’s all die in elegance” event. Think Guns N' Roses meets Nina Simone. So besides the heels (which I almost killed during the entrance song: Nomen est omen since it was 'Mr. Brightside' by The Killers), I NEEDED that top hat and feather boa, or have you ever seen Slash on stage without his hat or any jazz singer without feathers dramatically draped around his or her neck? Needless to say it also comes in handy to wear a detachable skirt to strip your outfit from ceremony to party: it helps competing with the sunrise while still moving wildly to disco tunes.

As far as the performance went, thanks for asking, I definitely played with all I got. Meaning, a lot of Dior “Pandore 754” Varnis which will now remain on the black & white keys forever.

Today’s shoes are some hot red pretty soles, which were shipped to the emergency room (aka heel doctor) with severe fractures immediately after the event.

Blame it on the lack of sunshine (bright colors needed), blame it on Grammy Sunday (fun outfits) or maybe it is that Fifty Shades of Grey is almost about to air (SM touch goes mainstream). Put all of the above in a blender and voila: your fashion mind will tell you it is just fine combining a shredded pullover (bright enough to cure Steve Wonder’s blindness) with some badass black leather on your stroll to the average flower market.

Though I’ve always been a fan of a statement boot, this is definitely a look that will make heads turn and nothing for a a highly sensitive shoe sole (typo and it stays...). But then again: Julia Roberts did it all before, so why not play a round of bitch stole my look while whistling “Pretty woman, walking down the street...” I guarantee instant good mood.

Happy Monday everyone!

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow

Am totally obsessed when it comes to Christmas decorations. Everything needs to be sparkling and perfect, and "more" is definitely "less" as far as I'm concerned. Choose white every year as the snow situation is always a bit uncertain in A'dam, and this sets the "wintery" tone best (yeah: I tried gold and stuff as well: didn't work).

My attempts to reproduce snow though are sad and numerous. Tried plain flower once, which was wonderful (looked so real!) until I caught a cold and continuously sneezed the decoration everywhere but where it was meant to stay. The same happened with silver dust, which I still find in my orchids and my heels (which found their way to the living room as shoe-chamber is overbooked). My clever attempt to glue almost 100 cotton pads on the window to reproduce idea of falling snowflakes was so much work that I didn't remove them until late summer, and the snow spray I finally used last year (frosted effect: loved it): well, had to bring couch sheets to dry cleaner twice after almost ruined washing machine with that damn sticky stuff.

See: I need REAL snowflakes for my Christmas decorations this year, even more so as my heel outfit (thank you Daniele Dentici), is so utterly beautiful Christmas-tree-ish. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! Will ya, please?
