Happy New Year!

07|01_2016

The long weekend after the New Year was so peaceful and inviting to do nothing that I did exactly that. Polished my heels, ate the rest of my Mom's cookies, slept in, cleaned out the Champagne bottles and before I knew, duty was calling again, and 2016 had officially started.

What a bliss to look back at the old year and give a warm welcome to 356 new days, completely free to be designed in each of your favors.
I hope they will be filled with new ideas, inspiration, laughter, health and happiness - plus the odd new shoe - which will carry you to great new places and adventures.

Have a fabulous start into the new year Shoemonsters!

Simply Summer!

Since we all know that the dutch summer can be a little... erg... let’s call it moody, I suppose a little reminder that it’s actually still summer can’t do any harm. That time of the year, where you wake up to a cloudless sky (the only thing “blue” on your mind), 30+ degrees and and the drama of choice which barely existing dress to wear.

Needless to say that it’s also almost too hot to heel, so all ladies opting for flats to avoid Elephant feet in Gazelle sandals are excused. Well, my heels today are Buffalo’s and with a big crocodiles tear I think back of the beautiful summery day I wore them. Don’t we all need a reminder from time to time that it’s summer somewhere?

Wedding Mania!

Wedding Mania!

This year seems the official year-of-love with so many weddings, that the fashion-head get’s a little dizzy due to all outfit choices: never prettier than the bride, no white, still festive, you know the rules. Plus, my feet still hurt from the last wedding party, Dr. Scholl to the rescue, please!!!

So when BFF not only called to attend his “I do” in Vienna recently but also to perform with him on stage to surprise the bride, it was clear to opt for a more edgy gown than you would normally expect for a formal, and sometimes “let’s all die in elegance” event. Think Guns N' Roses meets Nina Simone. So besides the heels (which I almost killed during the entrance song: Nomen est omen since it was 'Mr. Brightside' by The Killers), I NEEDED that top hat and feather boa, or have you ever seen Slash on stage without his hat or any jazz singer without feathers dramatically draped around his or her neck? Needless to say it also comes in handy to wear a detachable skirt to strip your outfit from ceremony to party: it helps competing with the sunrise while still moving wildly to disco tunes.

As far as the performance went, thanks for asking, I definitely played with all I got. Meaning, a lot of Dior “Pandore 754” Varnis which will now remain on the black & white keys forever.

Today’s shoes are some hot red pretty soles, which were shipped to the emergency room (aka heel doctor) with severe fractures immediately after the event.

Winter mood is always “nesting-bird” chic and definitely a comfort to someone suffering from fashion Tourette (new season, new colors, new outfit, new shoes, newnewnew). Muted colors, feathers and fur, PJ trousers and who cares if you hide your toes in Birkenstocks (socks still on) hibernating on the couch with loads of wine.

With the first rays of sun though, not only flowers are blooming but the fashion spirit awakens again, and after the annual panic attack (NEED TO WAX, NEED PEDI!) the desire to slip into open toes and sleeveless shirts reappears, ditching the winter coat for a very long time. YES!
Except that some of this years summer trends are quite winterly: rusty tones (70-ties), feathers on jackets (Burberry), shawls everywhere (Rock star attitude). Sorrynotsorry said all designers and I don't care either, as long as I can take the most appreciated accessory of mine everywhere: the SUN!

Will refuse that Birkenstock trend though which some idiot decided was hot in SS2015. Will save it for next winter (new season, new outfit, new shoes, newnewnew!!!!!!!!).

The most crazy day in Holland is just around the corner and every year around this time the same inevitably questions arise. Where to celebrate? (Boat madness? Street madness? Private madness?) How to pull a decent Lindsay Lohan (aka party to the max) without checking into rehab afterwards? And how to sport the must-wear color of the day (orange) without looking like an escaped tropic bird on acid?

Kingsday may be the most frolicsome national event of the year, fashion wise it is a disaster. There is a reason why fashion designers never choose full orange-outfits on any runway EVER. The same goes for footwear, unless you are a sneaker or Crocs person. Dancing, cheering, running around with 800.000 party companions soaking in all the madness will have it’s toll on your outfit (beer showers, canal water, probably rain this year) and your feet (toes stepped on, blisters, scattered glass) so you better be prepared.

I always opt for some cheerful comfy layers and some heels I won’t regret ruining (although NO heel deserves such a cruel fate), wearing a smile on top of everything and making sure my glass (=most important accessoire) is never empty. Then just go with the flow and enjoy to the max. No one ever will be excused wearing bright orange trousers with a tiger print in public on any other day. Be that tropic bird for once and HAVE FUN!!!

How to: Festival Fever

How to: Festival Fever

Coachella might be over, but worldwide festival fever has officially begun. I bet a million girls by now have frantically cut and ripped their jeans, rummaged through vintage stores to find the perfect fringed Kimono and applied tons of bumble & bumble surf spray to shine on muddy, plastic-beer-cup covered ground, instead of a red carpet.

I love a good hippie vibe reinventing itself every year, after all the only place to rather mess up your outfit (and definitely ruin your shoes) is a music festival. Psychedelic colors and flowery hair bands still work, as does anything with feathers applied, a hem withdrawn, and an instagram retro filter to take the right selfie - very preferable at sunset.

Then again: since Kate Moss legendary stepped out at Glastonbury festival in Hunter Boots, sporting the “I just had sex backstage”-look, we all know that the only fashion item needed to hone any festival look is a rock star husband. I’m working on it.

When Hedi Slimane took on the job as chef designer at YSL and cut the “Y” out of the famous initials to change it into Saint Laurent, I was a little bit grumpy. Yves has always been one of my design heroes, and especially the shoes they created before the take-over (my dear Troopers, my sweet Tributes, my adored Triptoo’s...) are still grazing my shoe-closet as must have classics.

But then again, that was before Hedi’s first show hit the runway and with it an irresistible 80ties rock 'n roll vibe, “laid back cool” attitude, ready to boost your inner fashion “I don’t give a sh.t, I simply look that great” goddess. It’s such a pity that daily life does not come in black & white, because with wearing these clothes you will certainly feel like an aspiring groupie (whatever age) lounging somewhere backstage being captured in a random Annie Leibowitz grainy photograph.

The balance between sophisticated and that tad of sluttish-ness never felt so desirable and most certainly after I tried the (already a classic) Bianca Bow Sandal I am a fan of the footwear too. Unfortunately Hedi never returned my calls so I am still wondering about the name change, but honestly: as long as there’s some shimmering logo cherishing the bags for old YSL times sakes I am just fine.

That, and I’m forever grateful that another old’ gal is presenting the brand (hello Joni Mitchell age 71!) in the new ads, so I feel entitled to do a little advertising too.
