On the road

On the road

I have been on the road for three days past weekend, supporting one of my favorite bands, the AdrianoBaTolba Orchestra. Eutin, our final destination might not be the sexiest place on earth (aka, it's in the middle of nowhere and you wonder if there is such thing as a fox and a hare to bid each other goodnight at all...), but it is THE place to be if you are working some Blues tunes.

And hell, they boys did! Above you find a little road map of all the destinations (four cities in three days, check!) and some favorite Rock 'n Roll heels that I packed. Despite I have to say: the only thing you really need, is a bunch of patches to cover your blisters from dancing and loads of stamina, because these guys not only can play: they can party like world champions as well.

Big X!

When Hedi Slimane took on the job as chef designer at YSL and cut the “Y” out of the famous initials to change it into Saint Laurent, I was a little bit grumpy. Yves has always been one of my design heroes, and especially the shoes they created before the take-over (my dear Troopers, my sweet Tributes, my adored Triptoo’s...) are still grazing my shoe-closet as must have classics.

But then again, that was before Hedi’s first show hit the runway and with it an irresistible 80ties rock 'n roll vibe, “laid back cool” attitude, ready to boost your inner fashion “I don’t give a sh.t, I simply look that great” goddess. It’s such a pity that daily life does not come in black & white, because with wearing these clothes you will certainly feel like an aspiring groupie (whatever age) lounging somewhere backstage being captured in a random Annie Leibowitz grainy photograph.

The balance between sophisticated and that tad of sluttish-ness never felt so desirable and most certainly after I tried the (already a classic) Bianca Bow Sandal I am a fan of the footwear too. Unfortunately Hedi never returned my calls so I am still wondering about the name change, but honestly: as long as there’s some shimmering logo cherishing the bags for old YSL times sakes I am just fine.

That, and I’m forever grateful that another old’ gal is presenting the brand (hello Joni Mitchell age 71!) in the new ads, so I feel entitled to do a little advertising too.

Although the Dutch tend to clog almost every European Highway with their campers when going on holiday, they also like to spend their vacation in so called Center Parks: agglomerates of look-alike bungalows in the middle of nowhere with the charm of leftover 80ies commune attached. A place for pulled up socks in Adidas flip flops rather than decent inches and therefor an absolute no-to-go for moi. I thought.

Because in February, when the weather is as mournful as the sight of someone sporting shower sandals as decent footwear, 1.000 hipsters gather at exactly that place to celebrate for three days and nights. DJ’s, music, art, fashion, the art of being and celebrating yourself and with others and anything, EVERYTHING goes! If only I knew, but next year: Next year I will bring my very own inflatable plastic palm tree, a matching parrot and definitely those flip flops.

Won’t happen again that I’m almost breaking my legs in that slippery bitch of a poolside while dancing wildly to 80ies music.

Amsterdam Dance Event was in full swing last weekend, and invite after invite poured in to dance across the city. I had decided to take a detour to mayhem though and rocked my babies at an entirely different event: the parquet flooring of an exclusive charity dinner.

The decision was probably a little bit selfish as my new favourite heels definitely deserve to be danced to the tunes of some fancy DJ: they walk and dance like a dream! But couldn’t help think that I'd have more opportunities to marvel at the beauties (below the desk) while picking mushrooms from china, rather than causing myself a hernia trying to move vividly to techno and glance down at the same time.

Chose the James Bond setting and cocktails, but - excuse me - of course I danced too. You don't refuse when 007 (aka fundraising CEO, aka Schöner Mann) asks for a waltz.

Just give a girl the right shoes, and she can dance the world, whatever the occasion.

No idea how you ladies do it, but I find it harder every year to come up with the most original and creative Christmas presents. Especially where four little nephews (with their very own definition of what's hot and what's not) are concerned. They know what a heel-alista I am, so why they asked (aka wrote to Santa) for "hip CDs" from their aunt (aka moi) is beyond me. Shoes would have been so much easier, and "aunt" does hardly know what a "CD" is anymore *sigh*.

Torn between spoiling them with some Techno, Bieber, or Timbaland featuring XY crap, or educating them in some of the classics (didn't we all HATE it back then when another generation wanted to introduce us to the "oldies"?): am working my ears and twitchy feet through the German Top 100. Wohoo! Find myself all "Hello", "Hands in the air","Wine it up", and how come 3 - 7 year olds listen to stuff called "Hangover"???

Am wondering if my sweeties would find it embarrassing to see their old auntie dancing wildly to tunes in Gangnam style (and high heels of course). Thank god nobody can see me.

Living with a man who is as crazy about music as I am about shoes has its advantages. Don't have to worry about the latest hip tracks (BF already knows them), hot insider tips ("Oh, Van She's new single? I'm friends with the singer, have the studio version, not released yet, wanna hear?), and I've become used to headphones as an actually pretty fashionable accessory (well, I look like Mickey Mouse wearing them but still....).

Only thing is that there's a constant battle in the house over which collection is taking up the most space (records vs heels).. But with my HIGH HEEL SALE coming up and the collection spread all over the house am pretty sure I win. Until tomorrow that is, when I will put the beauties in boxes and on display for your pleasure. And guess what, BF has made a playlist on Spotify, especially for all you lovely heel-alista's who will be coming tomorrow, and those who care as much about inches as about some cool supporting tunes.

Wohooo: turn the music up ladies and the high heels on: am already dancing!

Timing

Late, late, late: even on a day off, I manage to run behind schedule.

It’s an unfortunate relationship and however hard I try: time is definitely not my BFF and always seems to work against me.

Today I’m meeting my sweet friend Rockbitch (definite BFF, bitch can only be understood as a compliment here). As I dash through the rain (to be ON time) I think about all the great times we had together when Rockbitch still lived in Amsterdam.
Being one of the most talented singers herself (think Blondie meets Joan Jett), you can imagine that most of our stories are musicbackstage related.
Which we are so good at! We drank with the Black Keys (a story that needs to be told on it’s own), sneaked backstage into concert halls (oh well, that would have been me), and I can imagine no one else to share a “Slash” concert first row with, dribbling sweat (Slash) and all night dancing (us) included.
Today we quickly catch up (not much time) on the essentials:
Her love for beardy, Nordic men (preferably musician), my love for one certain beardy Dutch man (musician), music, shoes and, surprise: more music (her) and more shoes (me).

It’s so great to see her that, once again, I realize time can also be a bitch when you just want to hang with a dear friend and forget about stupid timing.

OK, just one more coffee then, let today’s post be just that little bit later that I have been all day.
