48 hours in São Paulo

48 hours in São Paulo

Although my heels have been back and running around in Amsterdam for quite some time, I am still caught in memories of lovely Brazil, all the lovely things we saw and the treasured places we visited. One of my favorite cities was definitely São Paulo: a city so vibrant and fast that NYC seems 18th century in comparison (sorry lovely NY: I still love you). So if you have some time (be it just 48 hours) here are some essentials you should go see and take your heels to. (All tips today were provided by my lovely Brazilian friend and local Zaza.)

♥ Take a stroll down Rua Augusta,
a beautiful Boulevard with lots of Boutiques (from luxury to reasonable prices).

♥ Have lunch like the locals and stop by Frevinho.
It’s been there for more than 50 years, and is frequented by all for a hangover cure
on the weekend. I loved their roast-beef sandwich in Ciabatta bread
(loads of mayonnaise and the Brazilian all over pepper: Tabasco) www.frevinho.com.br

♥ Have the best ice-cream in town further down the road at “Bacio di Latte” and say hello
to the calories 2000 - 4000 (a sin worth it!) www.baciodilatte.com.br

♥ Also definitely worth a visit: MIS (Museum for Picture and Sound, we saw the
David Bowie exhibition which was mind-blowing - Avenida Europa, 158),
or MuBe (Brazilian art Museum).

♥ The restaurant at MIS is also a tip for dinner and you can take a walk in Parque do Ibirapuera
(think Central Park) before filling your belly.

♥ For the total shopping experience head to Rua Oscar Freire: “posh” brands will happily try to
seduce your wallet and for all luxurious babes: Rua Bela Cintra and Rua Haddock Lobo with shops
like Louis Vuitton and Cartier is your place. For bitches on a budget there are malls
like JK or Iguatemi to get happy too.

♥ But you definitely have to visit Brazilian super shoe brand SCHUTZ at Rua Oscar Freire, 944.
Lovely LOVELY shoes for a fraction of the price you would pay in Europe.

♥ Last but not least (and because shopping makes one hungry - and thirsty): Best bar in the city:
Astor. www.barastor.com.br It’s located in a neighborhood called “Vila Madalena”, which is very famous for its night life. Advertising people and musicians love it, so my place to hang out.

♥ And just for a small night cab: find plenty of nightclubs, bars and restaurants in Itaim!
See you around!

My dear friend Kim’s last big night out as an unmarried woman might very well have been a synopsis of all bachelorette movies ever made, and I am absolutely tempted to add the whole content of “The Hangover” part 1-3. Than again taken from the bits and pieces I can actually recall.

A bunch of giddy gals (all of them armed with a second pair of comfy heels, determined to dance all night long: well done sisters!) changing the canals (boat trip!) and dance floors of Amsterdam in one steamy catwalk of oestrogen’s... need to say more? YES, we ended quite literally behind the bar, YES, there were male body parts flashed, YES heels and toes got insured (hello blisters and corns), and when did I actually think it’s a good idea to climb up that DJ-booth?

About that tiger in the bathroom next day: Well, I didn’t really check yet: but there is definitely a very heavy, very fat cat sitting in my neck purring maliciously. Please no one ever uses the word Mochito again, thank you very much.

15 years ago I found myself at an event in Berlin, telling a nice bloke at some bar about my passion for shoes at 4 o clock in the morning. Today, it so happened that exactly that guy flew me in to Munich to present (I’m a muse! I’m a muse!!!) his outcome of exactly that conversation: the most amazing shoe case you have ever seen.

Hans Buchegger, couldn't let the brainy itch go of where - for christ sake - a crazy gal like me (and Sylvie van der Vaart amongst others) would store their precious’s (aka beloved Jimmy’s Charlotte’s and Loubies) and developed something incredible. A rotation shoe case, operated by its own iPhone App (take a picture of your babies, press, and they will be delivered to your service instantly) supported by a little bit of shiny light, which will turn into a mirror (handy! - make up check!!!) when not in use.

Phew. Have I seen something like that before? Nope. Did someone ever mention “It takes a little bit of crazy to come up with something genius?” Hell yes, and all game I am! All I need now are enough Jimmy’s and Loubies to make the investment just worth it. Might be the first time that I’m not only gushing about shoes, but about their “home” as well. Well, if that’s not Luxury Desire indeed, I don’t know!

But the shoe case works with all kind of brands, I swear!

Obsessions of July

The dutch summer this year sets me in holiday mood almost every day, (yes, yes: nature woke up from it’s six years beauty sleep and spoils us to the max), but especially when I find myself packing my bag almost every weekend heading to VPVL (aka Very Pregnant and Very Lovely) BFF’s house on a lake. I mainly appear in the same outfit (-don't tell anybody!), but this is exactly how a holiday should feel.

An indecent amount of heels (one big bag), some cut jeans and accessories (another big bag) my man and friends are all I need to unwind. Oh yeah, the occasional book I pretend to read maybe, but in the end it’s all about what will be on the grill for dinner, are we not too lazy to grab the boat for a trip, and (huge issue!) which nail polish to use.

Having said so: expect worse, because -vacation, check!- we just booked a REAL holiday in France in a couple of weeks. My brain might very well be as supple and fried as the marsh mellow I intend to grill THIS weekend. Wohooooo, blame it on the sun.

Jazz usually makes me yawn (aka introverted musicians moving weirdly to tunes which make you want to fall asleep after five minutes have never been my thing), and since I’m not a big fan of sleeping anyway (boring!) I tend to avoid it. Must confess though, that the combination of the perfect location, the most chilled mood, and some neighbours playing Gershwin is quite inspiring and hard to resist (aka instantly triggers my “relax button”).

After having had a wonderful lazy and sunny weekend (almost, but only almost, too lazy and too sunny to put on some decent footwear), pouring glasses of ice-cold white wine only, unwinding (haha - from doing nothing except reading glossies and being lazy), I feel like I am on vacation in my own town.

Am now having the blues (in a good way!) and am suddenly very, very ....... muahhhhh.... this feels so relaxed....... very.................zzzzzzzzzzzz...

Besides being crazy about heels, I have another (more hidden) passion: cooking. Whenever I have the time, I love strolling around markets, shopping for food (the pleasure of smelling truffles or herbs is almost similar to the irresistible scent of a brand-new leather shoe), and trying my best in the kitchen to pamper friends and BF.

Cooking requires a lot of practise though, and - like learning to walk in 10 inches (don't stumble, mind the gaps!) - some time until one is able to produce something presentable. The deflated souffles, the sticky rice, the burnt chicken, the watery veggies: I had them exactly as often as the usual blister, the sore toes and the charming appearance of a drunken sailor tottering in extreme highs. But eventually never giving up pays off, and today am juggling heels and kitchen knives kinda OK-ish (aka still ambitious).

Must pat myself on the back, perhaps bragging just a little, but if I humbly compare myself to idol Mr. Oliver, I may very well win when it comes to being “hot while cooking". As far as I know, Jamie never wears high heels.

Pizza, Pasta and Arrivederci!

Pizza, Pasta and Arrivederci!

Be honest. How many great Spanish designers do you know? Quickly now, quickly! None? OK. Favorite Spanish dish apart from tapas and paella (cojones do not count!)? Hmmmm. One more: favorite Spanish drink apart from sangria that doesn’t give you a headache? Yeah. There you go.

But soccer, SOCCER the Spanish can play, causing more than a headache for everyone supporting Italy yesterday: a meltdown.
Gathered with a whole crowd, watching the game, having Heineken (uuuups Dutch) and supporting favorite team shoe-wise (Italian flag anyone: what comes first: green stripe ore red?) obviously didn’t help in getting Balotelli and Co “al arrabiata” rather then “al dente”.

Have never seen so many Vespas on my way home looking really sad.
And my shoes (bought in Rome back then and pulled out of the closet especially) within 94 minutes somehow shrank from a size 7 (read great expectations) to……zero.

So, may I just quote my friend Laura on this: The Italians should stick to what they do best: pizza, pasta, wine, fashion and shoes. (OK, added the last two myself….. :-)
But fair enough: Corso Como, Linguini, Stefano and Domenico, Barolo - you will remain my number one anyway. In lifestyle. Arrivederci!
