How to: THE DENIM GUIDE

How to: THE DENIM GUIDE

My 80ties nightmare is a pair of high-waist mommy jeans, worn with a perm to distract from the most unflattering ass ever. But that didn’t stop me from following the nineties denim trend with a stone washed carrot-shaped piece of navy fabric accompanied with the shoe-of-the-hour: jogging highs. (Brrrrrr!) Since then I have been a little careful following “denim trends” and it’s ambassadors (unforgettable: Britney Spears and Justin in a unisex tip-to-toe indigo combo), but this season there’s no way around it.

Denim is back as strong as its woven texture and if you invest smart, you will have at least four good reasons to buy some must-have shoes to complete the outfit du jour (which anyway is THE reason to follow a trend, don’t you agree?). Nothing wrong with a jumpsuit worn with a statement heel now (my favorite for a lazy day, no other styling needed!) or a cute little denim flowery skirt to channel your romantic side (peep toes, booties, sandals!). And although I will have to get used to the legitimate wear of flare jeans, I need a good reason to purchase clogs (back on the runway and hot!).

Best of it: you can mix & match all of the above because the greatest thing of any denim trend (throughout the years): it goes with everything!
HAVE FUN!

Pucker up, ladies. Smooches abounded on the Spring ’14 runways, making their mark everywhere from shoes (Charlotte Olympia) to sunglasses (Jean-Charles de Castelbajac). Saint Laurent‘s Hedi Slimane doused an 80s-tinged ruffle top and short black wrap dress with an allover rouge lip print. Inspired by Yves Saint Laurent’s 1971 Vichy Chic collection, the smackers were a somewhat surprising embrace of the house’s history, and the high street (H&M: Sweaters! Zara: Scarfs!) just couldn’t wait to follow.

If mouthy accessories (anyone in risking a big lip?) are more your taste, look no further than my all time classic: a Lulu Guiness bag. Ah! I could have one in a different shade for every day. Or maybe that Diane von Fürstenberg I-phone cover? Or maybe that classic Chanel lipstick? Bright kisses (printed all over the object of your desire yourself) never run out of style. As does my shoe favorite of this month: Sule Orhan’s “Easy rider”.

Marc O’ Polo recently did a photo-shoot picturing gals as what they wanted to become when they were growing up. You know: princesses, actresses, the wife of Robbie Williams (my generation), or Harry Styles (today’s generation)... aka the usual girl stuff. I held an Oscar (the only accessory shiny enough to catch my attention) and they titled the whole piece of art “I'm a blogger now”.

Hm. Couldn’t help but wonder if that's actually an achievement. I mean everybody seems to have a blog these days, right? It’s so popular to write and share personal insights that it’s almost cool not to have a tumblr, wordpress or twitter account or own youtube channel. Plus forcing your boyfriend to take your picture in different outfits seems to me to be the new strain on relationships (*sigh*- I miss the good old "you didn’t put the cap on the toothpaste" debate).

But since it seems official now, I have a reason to run around with my laptop all the time (isn’t that soooo Carrie Bradshaw - aka totally outdated), pose randomly on the street (in incredible heels no doubt) and have my picture taken everywhere. And yes, these things really keep me busy! So what are you blogging about?

I can’t recal

l any summer in the past six years which has been as perfect and sunny as this one. With two major and unforgetable weddings, the delivery of one beautiful baby and half of my girl friends knocked up (the ““flower and the bee” story works perfectly indeed...), the sun was not only shining all from the above but continuously in my heart as well.
Due to all the beautiful moments flowers were simply everywhere (in vases, on vests, on dresses or heels, in the form of bouquets or -the very rare occasion- on MY BALKONY). In all their brightness, beauty, vulnerability and evanescence they picture everything the last month stand for. We never had so many sunny days (glee), never so many roses blooming on the sides of the canals (beauty), never so many occasions to slip on featherweight dresses (ease), never so many evenings sitting endlessly outside sipping rose, listening to the very busy bumblebees (pure joy).

It’s also the end of the summer officially, so one last time to put together a flowery wishlist to not forget all that brightness when the leaves inevitably will start falling again.

Here’s to the flowers, the bees and the circle of life in general which all did a fabulous job this summer (ok, sun,- you did well too...). No reason to say good bye though: spotted flowers all over the a\w catwalk already.

Once a Shoe-addict…

Once a Shoe-Addict....

When it comes to fashion I am very much like any other decent junkie: always on the run for the next fix. And I may very well show typical symptoms (aka become moody and unbearable) when my needs are neglected for too long.

Usually it helps to dive into some fashion mags to calm down a little (like methadone for the restless fashion soul), but nothing feels better than actual shopping. Or just going on a fashion stroll to get inspired.

Luckily Amsterdam is full of opportunities to get high on trends and styles -spending way too much money ... but a true addict knows his or her sources well, so I thought I might very well share them.

If you are a bitch on a budget head to the Albert Cuyp market, as everything trendy will be sold there for a fraction of the designer price. If you are married to a football-player (and in the possession of his credit card) Azurro in the PC Hoofdstraat will calm your label-addiction. Wanna make Rachel Zoe jealous? Then dive into the small stores in the Nine Streets, for some alternative vintage finds.

But since I found out that my favorite “affordable-designer-item-dealer” YDU sells shoes too, I guess you will find me there first. Nothing better than getting a double load of satisfaction.

Relationships

Relationships

Relationships are a funny thing. Enriching and comforting, powerful or destructive, you will grow with them and always be challenged. So never underestimate the relationship that you build with - yes, of course - a shoe.

It appears they're not so different from the ones you build with the living. Think love at first sight: a mutual and genuine understanding that you will be mates for a long time, or the fact that some leather friend only reveals its beauty or “fit” after you have spent some time with them (aka got over the blisters and walked them in). You need to know if they are good sports after a couple of drinks (reliable to carry you) and whether they enhance your mood in tough times. Well, as for the latter: non of my shoes ever complained when I told them silly, slow or perhaps even slightly boring stories: EVER!

And teaming up with today's cuties I can kick ass, feel strong and will still feel beautiful even when acting dorky. Bring on Wladimir Klitschko: this relationship is built to last forever.

A while ago I met a beautiful girl called Sule at the B-day bash of a mutual friend. Nothing better than sharing a good conversation with a gal on an average Saturday night anyway, but what if it turns out that this one in particular not only shares the same profession (dedicated-witch-swinging-the-magic-wand-to-make-everything-look-better, aka Art Director), but is into shoes as well? Even better: designs the hot stuff that brings a smile on every gal's face accompanied by a deep *aaaaaaaaaaaaah*?

Needless to say, am in a-(aaaaaaaaah)-we of someone building a shoe label from scratch (all by herself!) anyway, but was even more swept off my feet (literally) when I saw the cuties. "Rock Chick" meets "No Nonsense Lady" would describe the first collection best, and since I'm kinda both (ok: scrap the "no" before nonsense), am utterly delighted to be one of the first to wear and write about this hot new brand on this very blog (it's won't be the last time, I promise).

Had nothing better to do of course than to ditch the "Lady" too and take my precious pair out partying, only to cool them down "L'Enfant-Terrible" style afterwards.
Nomen est omen after all, isn't it?
