Fashion Week Flawless | DORHOUT MEES

Fashion Week Flawless | DORHOUT MEES

Raindrops slowly drip from the back screen, subtly dimmed light creates the illusion of water on the catwalk, everybody is shut down in silence and eagerly awaiting.

I'm sitting front row at Dorhout Mees’s eighth collection at the Amsterdam Fashion week, and probably didn’t shut my jaw for the entire duration of the show. An endless floating transformation from structure to dissolution, a delicate dream of sophisticated organza layers to super tight and sexy construction. “O” - I whisper in awe, which also happens to be the name of the collection. “O” refers to the simplicity yet complexity of water crystals which the über-talented designer translated into a symphony of subtle blues and mellow pinks, some delicately wrapped in pleats, others in sharp cut out silhouettes. All of the designs are meticulously crafted and fitted to the bone, even the prints reflecting the iridescence of water surface. So elegant, so feminine, so flawless! You literally want to dive into every single piece of perfection presented.

If I may personally pursue the idea of a natural floating process: this talent doesn't need to show at the (nonetheless beautiful) river Amstel: it definitely needs to be the Seine!

Oh, and I totally forgot about today’s heels,
but who's to blame, am still busy closing my mouth, and spinning in vain in one of Dorhout Mees’s gorgeous creations myself.

Whenever in need of a special detox day is (very much appreciated after all the partying whilst celebrating Kingsday in the Netherlands) I head to the Dutch seaside to enjoy nature and get back in touch with the pure elements.

Just taking the heels out on a relaxing stroll (balancing like a clown on eggs in the soft and moist sand), feeling the gentle breeze of the Dutch wind (probably wind force 10) and wearing nothing but a lace dress to make sure the sun can gently caress your skin (which you won’t feel because the stiff breeze is almost blowing you out of your Guccis): what a great idea!

I assure you, you will feel absolutely sober and rejuvenated afterwards and definitely HOPE you never have to do this again, LOVE the idea of going home and cuddling in blankets, and have FAITH that one day, ONE day you’ll learn to dance on the beach in heels and not look like an idiot doing so. But well, detoxing is overrated anyway. Where’s the next party?

Happy Céline!

Happy Céline!

One of the most outstanding trends this season is no doubt the artsy coloring, appearing on the catwalks from Celine to lovely Chanel. Happy, wild strokes of brushes gone wild everywhere, and since it was Easter this weekend where the tradition of coloring things is a beloved routine, I thought I might very well just unleash my inner Picasso too.

Though eggs seemed a little eighties to me, and I have bad experiences hiding them enthusiastically the night before Easter Sunday (the smell of a rotting egg: not the fanciest scent in your home indeed!), I turned creative.

And what could boost the desire to find a hidden treasure more, than hiding a pair of self-painted new heels anyway? So lets pop the tubes of your coloring box before popping the champagne to celebrate ergh... why not just yourself and creativity? Bring it on gals, and Happy Céline!

Billie Rose for Sacha

Sacha, an established (shoe- of course) brand in the Netherlands recently invited ambitious bloggers nationwide to design a pair of shoes, and I had the honour of interviewing one of them: Billie Rose. This 24-year old lady from Amsterdam has been sharing her daily wardrobe inspirations online for three years now - luckily supported by her equally fashionable boyfriend who takes the pictures (am jealous indeed: these days the mere mention of "photo" or "shoe" are enough to send BF running...).

In cooperation with the shoe company, her design (a little bit of Balenciaga boot, a lot of bold buckles) is the perfect friend to brave any Amsterdam fashionista's worst enemies: cobble stones (aka ruined heels), physical exercise (aka cycling), and bad weather (please, let's not talk about it). With chicks like Alexa Chung and Cara Delevingne taking the lead for her design, Billie Rose developed something very practical for a sturdy, yet feminine generation. In which they can take on a festival terrain as self confidently as they impress the male gender (cool factor!), and therefor: Chapeau!

Eat this, Cara and Alexa: I’m wearing them first!

When it comes to inspiration, I've never really run short, especially if it’s shoes, fashion, or accessories that we’re talking about. And the desire some girls seem to have, to have exactly the same purse, heels and dress as their colleagues or friends has always struck me as odd. Where’s the charm in being identical? So I laughed my a**, ergh, heels off when I met up with BF Connie (who you know by now is a fashion wizard) and her Austrian friend Andrea:

All of us showed up with a little fluffy, furry (vintage) thingy, some statement jewellry (no sparkles no glory), and mixture of similar shades. As though we had all received the same briefing before, which of course, we hadn’t. You can probably imagine what our discussions were about too: an endless girl fashion talk without any full stops or commas (but a lot of exclamation marks indeed). Oh, and the odd "vintage" boyfriend theme of course, but uhm, that's so not exciting. Feel as though I’ve spent some hours in a washing machine, program fashion spin cycle, conditioner: 100% more inspiration. What a nice afternoon! If you will please excuse me now: have some serious shopping to do!

Release the Rabbit

Release the Rabbit

Met my cuddle partner in crime Keith (aka Pappa Bear) from NYC the other week. After the (obvious) cuddles and the great hello (I hadn’t seen him in years) it just felt wrong to bother him with the odd advertising talk or my heel problems (could hardly stand in the sand and was glad to have a big shoulder to hold on to). So we did what every proud “parent” would do: talk about our pets. You see, the Massive Office in NYC has these cute rabbits that I immediately fell in love with when visiting.

They are absolutely all over the place, all smoking and all giving you the naughty look… so it was clear: I had to have one.

Sadly I had to tell PB that the solitary existence of my little fellow is not that joyful. He’s rather lonely, has had to give up smoking when boyfriend quit (he needed at least someone supporting him in the house), and my attempt to acquaint him with the bunnies from the 1st of this month was to no avail.

But what a genius: Pappa Bear suggested I do a post with pet and take lonely rabbit out on a leash in the park.
Will just release him now to live happily ever after and make love to all his fellow bunnies out there crowding the green.
Thank you Keith!

Holland’s got talent

Whenever in need of some inspiration, I head straight to the next shoe store.

It somehow soothes me to wander from shelf to shelf, touching delicious leather, petting tiny details, and putting objects of desire back with a deep sigh after having seen the price. Very humbling but inspirational indeed.

Often I find myself involved in emotional “heel” and design discussions with like-minded staff members -sometimes with unexpected results.
So it happened that - having had a fairly long inspirational relationship with Daniele Dentici - I just found out that lovely Marco also does the most delicate accessories.

To die for necklaces, brooches, hats and much more, all matching so well with the shoes and the bags in the store.

A lot of “OMGs” and (again) “sighs” are involved while twirling in front of the mirror with my (ergh…Marco’s) stunning necklace which is totally perfecting my outfit.

So ladies, if you are ready to make a statement, I’d recommend dropping by.
Or even better: explore Marco’s stunning designs online.
Meanwhile I will continue running around being flabbergasted by all the hidden talent Holland’s got to offer.
