How to: THE DENIM GUIDE

How to: THE DENIM GUIDE

My 80ties nightmare is a pair of high-waist mommy jeans, worn with a perm to distract from the most unflattering ass ever. But that didn’t stop me from following the nineties denim trend with a stone washed carrot-shaped piece of navy fabric accompanied with the shoe-of-the-hour: jogging highs. (Brrrrrr!) Since then I have been a little careful following “denim trends” and it’s ambassadors (unforgettable: Britney Spears and Justin in a unisex tip-to-toe indigo combo), but this season there’s no way around it.

Denim is back as strong as its woven texture and if you invest smart, you will have at least four good reasons to buy some must-have shoes to complete the outfit du jour (which anyway is THE reason to follow a trend, don’t you agree?). Nothing wrong with a jumpsuit worn with a statement heel now (my favorite for a lazy day, no other styling needed!) or a cute little denim flowery skirt to channel your romantic side (peep toes, booties, sandals!). And although I will have to get used to the legitimate wear of flare jeans, I need a good reason to purchase clogs (back on the runway and hot!).

Best of it: you can mix & match all of the above because the greatest thing of any denim trend (throughout the years): it goes with everything!
HAVE FUN!

Kate Moss turned fourty this year, and so did boyfriend. Spent the last 31 days preparing surprise after surprise after surprise to make the big bang worth while (something like flying all guests to a private island... well...almost...). As we all know: turning fourty is something we like to forget rather than celebrate, so my task was mainly to make it as unforgettable as possible (he is a man after all.... show some guts!)

Due to all the celebration and preparation my brain got as steamy as my heels running from one fancy location to another and looking back everything appears in a big, lovely, happy blur now. Partying like a rock star is easier when you are 27: BUT! All the confetti bombs, the 24-hour party people, the unforgettable nights (plural: you didn’t think one party would be enough did you?) and was it us really pouring champagne in that bath tub of our four star hotel suite, and me in particular running around in lingerie (and VERY, VERY nice heels ladies!) covered in a big furry coat only?

Well, I say move over Kate, and HAPPY B-DAY boyfriend!

Obsessions of September

With all the magazines as thick as the Brockhaus encyclopaedia (mainly ads for the new season) I guess it’s official: autumn has arrived. And with it a runny nose, pantyhose, shorter days (sign in with your local tanning salon to grab a little extra Vitamin D now!) and the impossible-to-ignore desire to stock up on everything the catwalks have provided to help prepare feet and bodies for the cold.

Don’t you just love digging into all the new trends? I know I do, and though my favorites this year are way too many to pack into one post, have the slight feeling I will remain a post punk / early rock / 90s-forever chick until winter has me covered in full thermo gear again.

Lazy, as I always become when the days become shorter, I'll be sure to take full advantage of the “new” grunge chic (aka no need to wipe off mascara after partying anymore, so Courtney Love), aka greasy hair (hello, if Marc Jacobs says so, it’s cool!), aka fishnets with more ripped holes than Emmentaler cheese).

The only thing I'm wondering about though: where do I get these teeth grillz that are so popular now? I have always wanted to not only buckle up my booties but my teeth as well. Bring on autumn!

Driving Home for Christmas

Driving Home for Christmas

It's not really Christmas time until you've heard Wham ("Last Christmas") for the first time somewhere in a mall (very probably while buying heels...or maybe that's just me...), or Mariah Carey squeezing her jingle bells into a (too) tiny Santa costume shouting "All I want for Christmas is you". Christmas songs are probably the most important part of getting into the festive spirit, warming up for the 24th (along with some glitter, sparkle and twinkle ...preferably everywhere).

Frank Sinatra's "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", Doris Day's "Winter Wonderland": bring them on, am a romantic sucker for all of them (goose bumps and filled with anticipation). My favorite song of all (Christmas) time though is Chris Rea's "Driving home for Christmas". Yeah well, you might think it's utterly cheesy, but it captures my situation perfectly every year. I really can't wait to see all those beloved faces and it's always been too long too.. (uuups, is that a tear of joy dropping on my heels? Seems am really getting in the mood!)

Now. Just in case you're wondering: am not driving home on my bike, silly (or any car since my you know by now my "car" is in my shoe closet). That's just another warming up of course! Yipieh!

Timing

Late, late, late: even on a day off, I manage to run behind schedule.

It’s an unfortunate relationship and however hard I try: time is definitely not my BFF and always seems to work against me.

Today I’m meeting my sweet friend Rockbitch (definite BFF, bitch can only be understood as a compliment here). As I dash through the rain (to be ON time) I think about all the great times we had together when Rockbitch still lived in Amsterdam.
Being one of the most talented singers herself (think Blondie meets Joan Jett), you can imagine that most of our stories are musicbackstage related.
Which we are so good at! We drank with the Black Keys (a story that needs to be told on it’s own), sneaked backstage into concert halls (oh well, that would have been me), and I can imagine no one else to share a “Slash” concert first row with, dribbling sweat (Slash) and all night dancing (us) included.
Today we quickly catch up (not much time) on the essentials:
Her love for beardy, Nordic men (preferably musician), my love for one certain beardy Dutch man (musician), music, shoes and, surprise: more music (her) and more shoes (me).

It’s so great to see her that, once again, I realize time can also be a bitch when you just want to hang with a dear friend and forget about stupid timing.

OK, just one more coffee then, let today’s post be just that little bit later that I have been all day.
