A fairytale in eight acts

A Fairytale in Eight Acts

It’s raining cats & dogs in Leiden, one of the oldest dutch cities, outside of Amsterdam. Hardly anybody sets a foot outside and the plushy local theater is deserted. Yet there is vibrant activity in the main hall. Assistants shuffle lights and cables, tons of hair spray dust vaporizes on beautiful models dancing in a iridescent backlight, the swift hand of a make up artist blushing its last stroke on alabaster cheeks.

In the middle of all professional bustle, designer of the hour Esther Dorhout Mees, is focused to the max. Softly she speaks, when the flashlight goes off: “Long fingers, Alice”, “Chin a little bit down”, “Beautiful, hold that”.

We are backstage at “Theatre Decay” the editorial shoot of Esther's latest brilliant work, and I am in Cinderella paradise. Eight gorgeous gowns -a thousand hours of couture work- make there way from dressing room onto the stage, elegantly directed by the designer. There is something very fragile about all this, petit bodies leaning against thick velvet curtains, almost drowning in fluffy polstered chairs. This is were the inspiration for the whole collection has its origin and with today’s work, the journey of an idea will also end.

In an unobserved moment I sneak a pair of heels outside on the theater stairs. After a fairytale photo-shooting like this, it wouldn't surprise me if that prince will stop by, find them (and me) and we can live happily ever after.

Fashion week usually leaves me in a delightful fashion-coma for weeks afterwards: So much beautiful fashion to digest, so many trends to take in, inhaling inspiration with every fiber of a fashion addicted mind. In between champagne (excitement) and finger food (no time to eat otherwise) the adrenalin rush during this short time of frenzy is quite high - the fashion babble, interviews, outfit changes, burning feet due to running around, picture posing, people spotting: what a great circus to be part of!

I love every minute of it and have to thank 3 exceptional designers who made this year once again red carpet worthy (and 3 special pairs of heels to not let me down during all hasty sprints from one show to another). Please find my sketchbook of all the lovely ingredients for yet another unforgettable week above. I’m still in the clouds and want to keep on pretending that it’s o.k to jump around in evening gowns during day time, turning around for photographers (even if there are none) and keep on walking like there would be a red carpet everywhere.

Cold turkey now. Duh.

Raindrops slowly drip from the back screen, subtly dimmed light creates the illusion of water on the catwalk, everybody is shut down in silence and eagerly awaiting.

I'm sitting front row at Dorhout Mees’s eighth collection at the Amsterdam Fashion week, and probably didn’t shut my jaw for the entire duration of the show. An endless floating transformation from structure to dissolution, a delicate dream of sophisticated organza layers to super tight and sexy construction. “O” - I whisper in awe, which also happens to be the name of the collection. “O” refers to the simplicity yet complexity of water crystals which the über-talented designer translated into a symphony of subtle blues and mellow pinks, some delicately wrapped in pleats, others in sharp cut out silhouettes. All of the designs are meticulously crafted and fitted to the bone, even the prints reflecting the iridescence of water surface. So elegant, so feminine, so flawless! You literally want to dive into every single piece of perfection presented.

If I may personally pursue the idea of a natural floating process: this talent doesn't need to show at the (nonetheless beautiful) river Amstel: it definitely needs to be the Seine!

Oh, and I totally forgot about today’s heels,
but who's to blame, am still busy closing my mouth, and spinning in vain in one of Dorhout Mees’s gorgeous creations myself.

Fashion Week Fierce | BYBROWN

Tall, sleek, city amazons are walking down the catwalk, transparent silk flattering their bodies, while exaggerated shoulders make their way down the aisle to pushy beats. It’s the debut of Melanie Brown’s relaunched label BYBROWN at Amsterdam fashion week, leading the selected fashion crowd to frantic applause.

Inspired by water and its restless molecules, Melanie surprised by combining materials such as lyocell bamboo, cork, leather and silk to artfully create a fierce yet feminine silhouette for the modern city woman.

Having been a fan of her work for years, I couldn’t be more proud to attend the show wearing an earlier creation of my designer friend: a couture dream of four layers of different fabrics, showing her craftmanship and eye for detail. Though I feel like a romantic princess and never want to take a step out of my gorgeous gown again, I am now eager to express my inner warrior. Ready to channel the new look of perfect asymmetry (how is it possible!), throwing on the exceptional cape/raincoat and off I will go as the strong fashion combatant pictured. Congratulations Melanie!

About today’s heels: shoe it!
With this kind of stunning outfit we will leave all credits to the dress won’t we?

When two rising stars on the fashion firmament happen to circulate the same orbit, a supernova is to be expected. In the most subtle, elegant and pleasant way imaginable though. Esther Dorhout Mees (“Garments are emotion”) enchanted the catwalk of fashion week this spring with a collection entirely inspired by wood: vulnerable yet strong, like branches in the wind.

Her floaty, silky creations (a dream to wear!) were accompanied by stunning accessories (yes! bark of a tree as a belt) and shoes fresh out of the 3D printer of designer wizzard Janne Kytannen.

Nothing more and nothing less could have got me out of bed on a Sunday morning, walking couture in the dunes of Holland at a chilled wind force ten, with the most happiest fashion smile on my face. Now the only thing missing is some kind of Leonardo Di Caprio embracing me from behind so that I can shout out loudly “I’m the king of the (couture) world”.

I Know What You Did Last Weekend

I Know What You Did Last Weekend

Have been talking about that camera team that is coming to film for
months, and months is exactly how long I had to take get everything in shape (talking about the house, the shoes are shined and pretty as always). Well, somehow it seems that in my world redecorating very much resembles that bikini-figure-thingie I go through every year. You know you have to start in advance to really show off some results and somehow - miraculously - never make it in time. *sigh*

Spent the last 48 hours in full (paint proof) body condom to turn chambers (aka lovingly neglected mess) into sophisticated "Elle Decor" worthy photogenic sceneries, so am urgently in need of some glamour. Couldn't resist throwing on an evening gown and slipping on some cuties inbetween paint and chaos to cheer myself up, while realizing that not only will the home makeover not be finished in time, my very own beauty makeover (aka working girl turning model) very probably won't be either.

So now you know what I did last weekend - at least I got high on something else than heels for a change. Paint fumes that is. Bring on that filming crew.

There are a couple of events that cause everybody to post practically the same picture simultaneously (can't help but think how funny it would be if all the gals in the city would buy Louboutins and share at the same time). Yes, of course, they're natural phenomena: rainbows mainly (comment: awesome), extremely heavy bouts of rain (comment: sucks) or, like yesterday: a beautiful full moon over Amsterdam.

Within minutes moon struck pictures from all over the city popped up, and I couldn't get out of my sweatpants (Oops, confession! Seldomly wear couture at home...) and up in the window (comment: brrrrr!) quickly enough to capture the moment too.

Now the only thing I have to deal with is that the whole street probably thinks I'm some suicidal lunatic and people have called 911 to make sure I'm rescued. I wouldn't mind. A picture in some slim-fit white vest (Yohji Yamamoto please!) and some nice guys leading me downstairs in heels would deliver a great post as well.
