Happy New Year!

07|01_2016

The long weekend after the New Year was so peaceful and inviting to do nothing that I did exactly that. Polished my heels, ate the rest of my Mom's cookies, slept in, cleaned out the Champagne bottles and before I knew, duty was calling again, and 2016 had officially started.

What a bliss to look back at the old year and give a warm welcome to 356 new days, completely free to be designed in each of your favors.
I hope they will be filled with new ideas, inspiration, laughter, health and happiness - plus the odd new shoe - which will carry you to great new places and adventures.

Have a fabulous start into the new year Shoemonsters!

Long before I moved to the Netherlands and only walked my high heels on Amsterdam's cobble stones as a tourist, I always thought the Dutch were freaking crazy to sit outside whenever there was just the smallest ray of sun. Armed with gloves and cuddled in thick down- gear they would even do so in winter (aka freezing, aka am getting rigid knees and frostbites just thinking about it).

But obviously when you have lived in a country where the weather is more bipolar than all the characters in "Silver Linings Playbook" combined, you come to understand. Take this morning: -10 degrees, snowstorm and I'm tempted to wear three pairs of socks and rubber boots to meeting. The Dutch girl on the scooter next to me is wearing ballerinas. Lunch time: 0 degrees, awful wind. Decide am in utter need of snow gear and score leopard booties at Ab Donkers in the PC Hooftstraat. Two rays of sun! I spot two cabriolets. Roof wide open. 20 minutes later, 3 degrees warmer and sunny (for 15 minutes): Halleluja that's practically summer! Now if you'll just excuse me, can't take any calls or emails at the moment: have gone tanning.

Turns out I'm more Dutch than I thought. No silver linings. Really.

Breakfast at D.Dentici

Some people could have a horse for breakfast, some just a smoothie and a vitamine pill, others have no breakfast at all, and me.... well take an educated guess.
On my way to work I bump into the longest queue I've ever seen, and no, it's not a shoe-sale. People are standing in line for the opening of Abercrombie & Fitch. Fair enough: they did advertise the event for a week with half naked six packs (not talking beer) in front of their door. But now I can hardly find MY door to work, so have to make a small U-turn to marvel at something which I (personally) find so much more interesting than some overtrained tummies.

While everybody is waiting in the cold (UGG and Converse spotted everywhere - I would so fit in - NOT) to get their hands on some average US sweaters, am having a party (aka breakfast) at Daniele Dentici with the most original (lovely!) heels inside. Guess it's obvious by now: am having cognac for breakfast. Only question remaining: the cognac boots, the cognac booties or the cognac bag??? Decisions Decisions.

Today's shoes are Ritaeliseo.

Available at Daniele Dentici: not only for breakfast.

When it comes to inspiration, I've never really run short, especially if it’s shoes, fashion, or accessories that we’re talking about. And the desire some girls seem to have, to have exactly the same purse, heels and dress as their colleagues or friends has always struck me as odd. Where’s the charm in being identical? So I laughed my a**, ergh, heels off when I met up with BF Connie (who you know by now is a fashion wizard) and her Austrian friend Andrea:

All of us showed up with a little fluffy, furry (vintage) thingy, some statement jewellry (no sparkles no glory), and mixture of similar shades. As though we had all received the same briefing before, which of course, we hadn’t. You can probably imagine what our discussions were about too: an endless girl fashion talk without any full stops or commas (but a lot of exclamation marks indeed). Oh, and the odd "vintage" boyfriend theme of course, but uhm, that's so not exciting. Feel as though I’ve spent some hours in a washing machine, program fashion spin cycle, conditioner: 100% more inspiration. What a nice afternoon! If you will please excuse me now: have some serious shopping to do!

A Hairy Case

Whenever cat's are frightened, they tend to lose a bunch of hair at once. I've witnessed this phenomenon quite often (and now tend to think I might be the cause of scaring them sh**- ergh... hairless)... but it's actually rather funny (as long as you're not the one who has to hunt all that hair down with a vacuum cleaner afterwards).

Was reminded of the above as it's that time of the year (aka weather getting worse and worse) that one comes to rely very much on warm gear. Of course I don't mean by growing yourself some bushy eyebrows (although they are a huge trend this year) or by skipping the daily routine of shaving, I'm saying it's time to get the furry boots out.

So I released today's beauties from their boxes to confront them with their duty (aka helping me overcome own reluctance and getting me safely through wind and storm), only to find they'd lost almost all of their hair while safely stored in their "cage". Whoops! Seems I am not the only one NOT wanting to leave the house. Vacuum cleaner anyone?

On our way home from the cinema yesterday (Dear Emma Stone: loved your black overknees! Dear Emma Stone: teamed up with cognac-colored boots, not so much...), we strolled past all the beautifully lighted shopping windows: Whoopsie!
Autumn (heel) collections everywhere! And Mrs. Stone wasn’t so wrong in her bootie (color) choice after all: loads of dark green, brown, black, cognac colored beauties everywhere, just waiting to be worn. Now I know myself and a new heel season always means a stretch on bank account too...*sigh*

End up at the Daniele Dentici shop window, as glued to the window as Spiderman was to Emma just a couple of hours ago. Beautiful, inspiring stuff: soft leathers neatly arranged one after the other. I almost wished it was autumn and cold already so I’d have an excuse to buy them all.

(Spiderman’s ability to break glass would be very much appreciated too...)
Oh wait! It’s raining and cold outside today... the perfect excuse to hide somewhere dark green (Chesterfield couch), armed with intellectual literature, brown cookies and the odd (black) coffee, tucked snugly under a blanket.

And whoopsie!... how did those cuties land on my feet?
Obviously nothing wrong with adding a bit of “cognac” to the color pallet on a lazy sunday afternoon...
