Balance, bitch!

Balance, bitch!

Decided to do something special this month by featuring some of my most memorable blog experiences of 2014. This very first editorial is dedicated to all the seemingly impossible shooting locations and it describes my January mood: nothing is impossible if you are just stubborn enough to go for it.

So I found myself in the most ridiculous moments, battling extraordinary wind forces while shooting a (überprecious) designer gown which left me flashing underwear at 7 am in the morning in the Dutch dunes (sorry dear morning joggers, I didn’t mean to frighten you). Or freezing in a La Perla lace (!) dress in April on the beach. Anyone who has ever tried dancing in heels on sand please high five me now.

Shooting at 2000 meters above sea level was another moment where I thought: “stupid me, who is afraid of heights anyway?”. While digging out a 100 tiny pebble stones from under my heels I was cursing the idea (who did come up with that?!) of balancing on pointy rocks. Last but least I will never forget the moment a beardy woman won the Eurovision Song Contest, dancing the night away in bare enthusiasm.

May that be the spirit of the new year: it’s all possible as long as your footwear is not abandoning you and as long as you balance it out!

Big love!

Charm overdose

Charm overdoze

My cousin and her lovely daughter (you've already met them) visited Amsterdam this weekend for the first time, and as always when visitors are expected, the city pulls out it’s charm-sprinkle-machine and shows itself from its best (and most sunny!!!!!!!) side.

My credibility in complaining about gruelling weather conditions is completely lost as this first “meet and greet” with Amsterdam was 'spoiled' by 22 degrees, sipping rosés on terraces and beautiful and inspiring views everywhere (read: a lot of shoe-shop windows to marvel at while walking the city). Dutch light bathes everything, playing the (oh so working!) “rom-com” card, dipping the sky in soft rose colors at sunset, matching blushed cheeks due to all excitement. What a charming place this can be when the sun is out, and they still sell tulips in November. Even cobblestones look heel-inviting and no one cares about burning feet after a zillion steps in the direction of the next delicious meal.

My beloved Diva Amsterdam, you have a couple of new fans, and I (again) fell head over heels for your charm overdose. Than again: everything looks, feels and tastes better when you're enjoying it with loved ones. By that I mean people and footwear likewise. Hope you all had a wonderful weekend too.

A Little Fairytale

A Liitle Fairytale

Funny, crazy creatures us women are. We consider “shopping” a sport, “challenge” a purchase at net-a-porter, chocolate cake a sin, and sometimes we confuse romance with a price tag attached to an over-expensive bag. Modern princesses we are, always on the hunt for something sweet to delight our day (less the fattening effect of course).

Happened just recently that I bumped into something very very sweet (nope, no calories involved!) which left me totally happy and high on adrenalin - and am sure you can see where this is “going”: shoes.

Just around the corner from Amsterdam's busy high street (aka the Kalverstraat), OPEN SHOP is tucked away from the obvious and offers exactly the opposite: hand picked lovely fashion, individual accessories, and (affordable) high heels which will raise your metabolism more than that spinning class you recently signed up for. A little fairytale!

Oh, you don’t believe in fairytales? Well, believe in the slogan of this small Amsterdam gem: “Your husband called, you can buy whatever you like”. Better than chocolate cake I’d say.

All that glitter IS gold

Water and the incredible light (aka inspiration for artists such as Vermeer and Rembrandt to do some doodling) have always been an essential part of the history of the Netherlands. And are the reason why thousands of tourists now flood the city every year to explore the charm of the canals.

Living here, the relationship to all that water (mostly coming from above aka rain) and “golden moments” (aka light, aka sun) is only comparable to that of having a baby though. It will cry and pee most of the time (water, water, more water!), which you try to accept, endure and ignore until your nerves are so tense and your own mood so strained that you simply can’t stand it any more. But the moment baby smiles ONCE, just for a few minutes, you will forget everything and simply stand in awe and pure delight, forgetting everything.

It’s 11 o clock at night in my city, it’s summer and I’m walking my lovely heels (brand: Fersengold, this name can’t be an coincidence!). I am asking you: Isn’t the light still incredible? Isn’t the setting just gorgeous? And isn’t this the most beautiful city in the world? Yep, I assure you: all that glitter IS gold, and it’s all worth waiting for.

And when the rain begins to fall…

And when the rain begins to fall....

It’s a public holiday in most European countries, and could just have been the perfect long weekend. And the perfect monday of course: jumping out of bed with glee (and late), putting on the peep toes and a summery dress heading for a long day in the park (picnic), a stroll downtown (shopping), or just putting on some summery tunes while hanging with friends (on heavy rotation at the moment: Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” - ah, what a fantastic song to set a sexy summer mood....)

Am saying it “could have”, because I’m afraid the only “blurred lines” I get today are the ones of rain drops crawling slowly down the window. Again. And it took me a whole day of counselling to not just put a ton of very un-ladylike swear words in today’s text. Or actually no text at all.
x#@*&grrrrr*Fcu*k%±?Wt-xf_@&*????????

So when the rain begins to fall it’s once again only chocolate pie, Prosecco and Games of Thrones (episode 1-15 right after each other) which will make my day. Or maybe, MAYBE a new pair of heels (bought online to not have to leave the house). My current ones just got soaking wet anyway.

Wanna Be a Rock Star

Wanna Be a Rock Star

Jumped into heels and almost immediately on to set when asked to do some styling work for Dikker & Thijs (fancy hotel in the heart of Amsterdam). I mean, who wouldn't want to shuffle accessoires at a place where celebrities have dined and rockstars slept? Well, hello: I would. Totally have a crush on the atmosphere of hotels anyway. They are like a novel written by the personal stories of all the guests, and from the knowing smile of the accurate and discrete hotel crew am a 100 procent sure that they know quite a few.

How nice to visit all these treasure rooms enjoying all insights and working behind the (nonetheless luxury) scenes. Top tip though: High Heels are not really advised for an up and downstairs marathon of a four story historical building. But would I stay in this lovely 4 star residence? Definitely.

Am just wondering if they could put "TV's" on the room service-menu (to order with that bottle of champagne). I always wanted to be a rockstar and book the Penthouse suite, drink all the booze and throw the TV out of the window. Am sure the lovely crew at Dikker and Thijs wouldn't tell a soul.

Let’s Play Outside

Let's Play Outside

Just when I was ready to come out of my (self-chosen) hibernation and start bothering about spring trends (aka sleeveless dresses in graphic patterns), winter has struck back with a vengeance and covered Amsterdam in a white and silent blanket: snow! It's only a couple of centimetres that we're talking about, but as the Dutch never seem to be prepared when it comes to winter (except when the canals are frozen - read: skating boots) a whole city has now turned into a "sleeping beauty" - winter fairytale.

It's so quiet you may very well hear the ice flowers grow on your window (goodie bag from mother nature, delivering A/W trend "floral patterns" straight to your home - AWESOME!), and utterly tempting to stay inside indeed. Can't resist taking flowers out into their natural environment though and enjoy a "white" carpet for once.

Let's play outside, shall we?

Today's story was enthusiastically written before slipping on icy ground (damn you, leather soles!) and getting myslf a well deserved big bruise. Will never utter a bad word about the Dutch and their winter gear ever again.
