Pop of Color!

Almost every decent fashion blogger I know has at least one spring post that begins with the words: “It was such nice weather this weekend that I couldn’t resist matching my summery mood with the brightest colors in my closet.” Quite original right? Later in the year it will be all about how to sport white and how it’s such a fantastic contrast to your tan.... but who can blame them!

With the first flirty sun beams out, I caught myself (guess it’s a natural fashion instinct) removing all the spider-webs from my peep toe boxes, lovingly dusting yellow satin and “attention blue” leather, when some frenzy kicked in. All of a sudden the living room looked like some clowns had quite the swinger party and left without their clothes and heels (question to myself: do clowns wear heels?): but wow! How cheerful!

So here you have it: am coming out of the closet as well. As a sucker for the first pop of color of the year that is. Let’s wait until the sun has done it’s job and I have a nice tan shall we? I almost can’t wait to write about how gorgeously white pumps support summery glowing skin.

Have been trying flip flops (the Brazilian version: Havaiannas) for the past three days, but seriously: I’m not made for this kind of footwear. With blisters the size of the lemons they put in their Caipirinhas here, had no other choice than to change from flats to heels while strolling the lovely beach of Ipanema on yet another beautiful day in Rio. The city is so vibrant, and life seems wonderfully free and easy here, it is amazing how the recipe of sun, warmth, beach, and ocean always does its job. (The occasional Caipirinha works magic too I must confess).

Also wherever the cocktail described above is daily standard (talking weather ladies, not alcohol... ) styling issues are basically non-existent: all you need is a bikini, some sort of cover (dress or shorty short, who cares) and off you go. Favorite accessory of the day (any day since we've been here): a fresh coconut and some music in my head.

“The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes I smile, but she doesn’t see
She just doesn’t see
No she doesn’t see”

Lost in the garden of Eden

My weekend started full of plans, and most of them revolved around damage control. You know, the usual damage you face when you didn’t care too much about house or garden work during the week - (please read “garden” as “body”, which equally requires some attention, especially after months and months of wearing wool and tweed, you know what I’m talking about ladies don’t you?). But then everything changed completely because all of the sudden summer arrived in Amsterdam. The sun shining, the terraces shouting your name and all flowers in bloom at once. Paradise!

Forgotten was duty and boring “to do’s”, something as shiny as the sun (shoes!) refrained me from personal grooming (my pedicure feels very “nintynintynever *sigh*) and off I went, to get lost in the garden of Eden, and that's for once not a shoe shop but nature.

Please accept the sign “gone tanning” on my door for the next couple of days.

Yes, I tried to resist.Did my best to ignore the temptation of comfort (“would rather break my neck/leg in inches than be found dead in anything but heels” etc), and so fought blisters after long shopping day hours, climbed mercilessly over cobblestones, accepted the feeling of “can someone please amputate my legs” after a regular working day. All just to stay true to my mantra of running in heels (and smile the pain away): by all means and at all times. Well, I’m not writing this blog for nothing right?

So of course I couldn’t care less about the trend of shrunken mini heels (so perfect for the office/grocery shopping/comfy nights out dancing duh!!!!), but, well yeah. Here you go: I finally gave in. Adopted a pair of kitten heels recently, and now that I've lost all status of heel dignity, I can also admit that it’s not the only “kitty confession” I have to make. When no one's looking, I not only cuddle my leathery friends (those with the decent heels that is), but my forever favorite kitten-Kuscheltier as well. Glad we talked about it. Miauw!

Boyfriend surprised me with a weekend getaway for my birthday and as I didn’t know where we were heading, I found myself in the car with 3 pairs of shoes (preparation is everything ladies) and 4 outfit changes, ready to rumble: the streets of Antwerp as it turned out.

It also turned out that brand-new yellow satin heels are not the best match for a city paved entirely with cobblestones, but since I had already rescued the 10 inch Charlotte Olympias (peeking out of my purse all day, guess they needed some fresh air anyway) and left the flats in the car (YES, I was vain), the options were limited. But hey! It was Belgium (Chocolate! Champagne!), and besides the lovely company of BF my new other yellow friends also turned heads.

This all happened before I was surprised with my first Chanel purchase EVER (which did not come in form of a compact powder or a nail polish scored at a mall counter), and also before I found myself - Chanel shopping bag and all, very lady like -leaning into a container to score some Svarovsky crystals from a dumped chandelier. But that’s another story for another day. Happy Happy!

The other weekend I had the pleasure of enjoying the island of Ameland, a place with less than 3.533 living souls (half of them sheep) where the word “wedge” is probably mistaken for a sort of rare fish breed or a spare part for bikes. Here's what you do on this island: you cycle, hang out in the dunes and eat fish. But not my lovely photographer Nancy and me though: we were trying to put those shoes no one has ever heard of in perspective. Literally.

While trying to listen to Nancy’s orders from 20 meters away ("Foot higher, higher! More to the back - lower, hold it, HOLD IT!) balancing on one foot, I couldn't help but compare the awkward situation to (yeah sorry, it’s so tacky....): life.

We all have these ideas and will try to make them work, even while standing on not-so-solid ground, looking ridiculous. It might not work at first and we could fail and fall, only to get back on our feet again, simply to do it better the next time. A stiff breeze might blow and you might swear your guts out, but eventually everything will fall into place (aka perspective) and in retrospect it just looks so easy. WOW!

I actually never thought a pair of 12 centimeter heels could teach me a lesson. Thank you wedges, and thank you Nancy!

I am Switzerland

I am Switzerland

Since it's almost the end of the month (yes, that is a small *sniff* you hear) and with December, the last month of my blogging "career", looming: I actually already felt some loss this morning. I had expected to feel quite neutral (aka Switzerland) while browsing through my remaining heels to shoot, but turns out am quite emotional. You know, just a little Halle-Berry-when-she-received-the-Oscar-ish (and again: god bless my idea to never photograph my face).

So am shuffling the "not yet featured" precious pieces to one corner to get some planning started (not a thing is planned this year without my special "heel-agenda" in mind), and ready for today's "neutral" shoot... but when it appears that either some rainbow vomited over the floor or it's my tears that have made it slippery (I like to be dramatic sometimes), I have to decide differently. Simply can't shoot some cool "nude" when I'm not feeling like it.

So well, purple it is then. Which coincidently is also the color of my favorite chocolate (that I will have to eat tons of afterwards to compensate hysterical status). If I can't be Switzerland, "Milka" will do. Purple is the new neutral anyway.
