Obsessions of April

Obsession of April

THE big day for the Netherlands has arrived, and I can only assume it’s also the day that Queen Elizabeth is glimpsing at the Nethererlands in anxiety and whispering in Charles’s ear: “Don’t get any silly ideas, son!”: The last Queensday celebrating Beatrix after having served her country for 25 (?) years and the coronation of the new King Prince Willem Alexander has arrived!

Anticipated by all (expect Elizabeth probably), promoted in the news to the max, I honestly don't expect anybody is reading shoe blogs today, but all are rather out and about, dressed up in the national colours (so wish it wasn't orange: SO. NOT. FLATTERING) and celebrating their hearts out. A massive spectacle to be consumed annually “royalty free” -as long as you can bear the madness and the amount of beverages washed down of course.

Reason enough though to dedicate today’s “Obsessions of the month” to royalty in general. A little alternative thinking on the subject, (also for those who might prefer staying at home and not ruining their heels by exposing them to the “mob” on the streets...) but on the other hand: Nothing wrong with pulling off a tiara once in a while. So off I am as well: have to say “Bye Bye Bea” and “Hello Willi” too. Long live the Queen!

As we are very refined creatures (I’m talking ladies, sorry guys!) we adore word combinations that instantly make us smile.

“Free” and “champagne” for one, or “Tiffany” and “Co”, “Johnny” and “Depp” for good days and “Ben” and “Jerry” for bad…. and of course the two magic “S” words: “Sample” and “Sale”.
Oh, and I wouldn’t mind a combination of all the above at once, but hey: that’s just me.

Twice a year inspirational shopping Mecca YDU has a Sample Sale and whenever I can, I am “a” and “ttending”. Selling. Not buying (Oh come on girl, don’t lie to your readers: you always do…. OK).

It’s so much fun to see all the girls flocking together for one purpose: to score unique up-and-coming designer pieces at bargain prices.
The back room of the store turns into one huge changing room: a wobbling mass of flying bras, giggling gals, all styling assistants to each other and fashion experts for themselves while fitting and swapping pieces. Chatter, laughter and the odd squeal (zipper too tight) will fill the room, and I have never seen anyone leaving with anything less than a big smile (only comparable to having just met Johnny Depp).

Oh, you are about to ask about the shoes! Yeah. Good point. We do not sell heels and I will very probably wear flats.
But you are all invited to join the fun, and it would be great to see you.

What else to do on an average Sunday? :-)

The day after Paris

Due to overly hectic schedule (so much to do so little time) cozy evenings with friends are rare but highly appreciated when they do happen. Yesterday we managed to meet our dear friends Connie and Daan at a very posh sushi restaurant. Also a very welcome opportunity to dress up and feel fabulous.

Connie was wearing a stunning glittery ensemble, looking like a burlesque dancer right out of the 20’s and I rocked my new peach chiffon full length skirt,

Utterly flattered that people in the restaurant seemed to be staring at us (must have been our glamorous outfits and elegant appearance) whispers and frantic use of their electronic devices included, I almost choked on my seaweed salad (very green, very delicious).
Turns out it wasn’t us causing the stir but famous duo Paris (Hilton) and Afro (Jack) dining in the same establishment. Paris in jeans!

Could have sworn though that my attempt to at least charm everyone with a bright smile and swinging skirt as I headed for the bathroom (must admit that I went after Paris and was tempted for a second to dismantle the toilet seat she had sat on to sell it on eBay) totally worked since everyone seemed very amused.

It wasn’t until the very end of the night (on exactly that toilet) that I discovered that I was sporting virtually the whole seaweed salad between my teeth and a big soy sauce stain on my peach bum.

Have decided to hide at home today and punish myself by wearing flats and cleaning up my closet (must find jeans).

Queens night

This weekend the Dutch are celebrating their Queen: a 48 hour frenzy during which people drink way too much beer and dress hideously in orange (so Burberry 2011).

Accessories such as crowns, cowboy hats and boa’s (basically anything you would never wear in everyday life) are sold out for days, making people look like canaries on acid as they dance in the streets.

I would have been no exception if we hadn’t decided to take it slow this year, no plans, just stay at home and take it easy…
A refreshingly different approach to the going completely wild of the last few years (I’m afraid there are still pictures on Facebook of me sitting on a guy’s neck sporting an orange bra and “Eau de Heineken” (aka covered in beer from tip to toe).

Right. That was before I read in the Elle newsletter that tonight is an ultra hip party featuring the DJ duo Auxiliary tha Masterfader and Steve Johnsen.
How could I forget that boyfriend and my friend have to work? And that I will of course be groupie, playing my private leading roll in the Queens-night version of “Almost famous”?

I say bring on the orange accessoires, it’s party as usual!
